Calgary Health Region board approves plan to expand laboratory services; Mission, Bridgeland sites c
Date : - 25/02/2003
The Calgary Health Region and Calgary Laboratory Services have received approval to expand laboratory services to growing Calgary suburbs to improve access to neighbourhoods in the southeast and north.

“Calgary is growing quickly and we need to provide services to our newer communities,” said Dr. Cam Waddell, Chair of the CLS Management Committee. “This is part of a plan that was laid out two years ago for managing our human resources against the pressures of geographic and demographic changes in our population.”

A new CLS Patient Service Centre (PSC) is currently being built in Douglasdale and will be opened later in 2003. CLS is also in the process of identifying another location in North Calgary in conjunction with the Diagnostic Treatment Center planned for that area of the city.

To accommodate the expansion, smaller laboratory service centres in Mission and Bridgeland will be closed and consolidated at the Gulf Canada Square PSC. Bridgeland and Mission each average about 2400 patients per month, much lower than a larger PSC, which sees between 8000 - 9000 patients per month. “The Gulf Canada Square Patient Service Centre, which currently averages 3400 patients per month, has recently been upgraded to provide better, faster patient access,” Dr. Waddell confirmed. “As always, we will continue to address the needs of immobile patients. Anyone who is home bound will have access to our mobile laboratory service.”

The Calgary Health Region and Calgary Laboratory Services User Committee delayed the decision and spent two months reviewing the plan after opposition arose last fall. Two committees of the Region’s board scrutinized the results of the review before recommending the board accept the plan.

The cost of maintaining the Bridgeland and Mission PSCs is more than $650,000 per year.

Calgary’s population grew by more than 25,000 last year and has grown by more than 250,000 people since the 1988 Winter Olympics. The city’s southeast and northwest neighbourhoods are significant growth corridors. This has resulted in some parts of the city having multiple PSCs, like the downtown core, while other peripheral areas in the suburbia, are underserved. Calgary Laboratory Services continues to explore ways to ensure that residents in all city quadrants have reasonable access to a PSC.
