Rowley Hospital
Charity Close to £1 Million Landmark
Date : - 17/08/2009
ONE of Staffordshire's most important charities has yet again provided University Hospital with vital equipment.

The North Staffordshire Hospital Cancer Fund, created in 1977, is very close to raising nearly £1 million for the University Hospital of North Staffordshire to help with the detection, prevention and treatment of cancer.

Their latest donation is an £80,000 machine that could help people from Stoke-on-Trent discover the results of their cancer test the same day.

Sheila Gurney, of North Staffordshire Hospital Cancer Fund, said:

"The charity was originally set-up because we wanted to make sure all the money stayed locally, many charities are so big the money obviously goes to national projects. We have done this for so many years and it is fantastic to see the £1 million mark on the horizon. The money has helped so many people over the years, my colleague Sue Simcock has been on the committee since the very start and we are just delighted to see yet another piece of equipment helping to save lives."

David Frodsham, Lab manager for histopathology at UHNS, said:

"This equipment opens up the possibility for patients who attend a breast clinic to get the results of a biopsy the same day. This would relieve some of the stress for people as they would not have to worry about this overnight. This piece of equipment processes a piece of tissue very quickly so a consultant can examine it with a microscope to see if there is a cancer or not. The old equipment would make this an overnight job, but the new equipment enables us to process the tissue in just 90 minutes."

Steve Rushton, Charitable Fund manager at UHNS, said:

"This is not the first piece of equipment we have had from North Staffordshire Hospital Cancer Fund. They are a fantastic group of people; they obviously became involved because they have had friends or relatives who have had cancer. We would like to say thank you to them and reassure them that the equipment they have donated will go a long way to helping the people cared for at our hospital. The group should be applauded for their hard work and generous support. The majority of people in Stoke-on-Trent will probably not get to see this equipment first hand but they can be assured it is working for them."
