Rowley Hospital
Children's Ward Go Potty Over New Donation
Date : - 21/08/2009
Employees at the ceramic tableware experts Dudson Ltd have raised nearly £3,000 to buy new equipment for the children's wards at University Hospital.

The wards, known locally as Cheethams, will use the money to buy hand held monitors so staff can check the children's heart rate and oxygen levels without having to lug around huge machines.

The workforce at Dudson Ltd, based in Tunstall, has raised the money through various endeavours over the past year, including a charity international football match.

Dianne Jervis, a cup shop operative at Dudson Ltd, said:

"There has been a long standing relationship between Dudson and Cheethams and the workers chose to support this charity once again. We organised a ‘Three Peaks Challenge' completed by our Chairman Ian Dudson, along with Mark Dudson, Danny Goodall and Martin Brown. There was also a charity international football match between the English and Polish workers, a "Dudson Factor" talent competition, regular raffles, collections and weekly giving through the payroll scheme. Many people in Dudson Ltd have been involved in the charity work for a number of years and Cheethams is one many would want to continue to support in the future."

Rose Burt, ward manager at Cheethams, said:

"It is marvellous that Dudson Ltd have chosen the children's ward's as one of their charities to support because we really do need your support. There are a number of specialised children's wards, we have a paediatric intensive care unit, a short stay 48 hour ward for children who are quite sick but recover quickly, a ward for children with complex needs and a separate ward for children with leukaemia or tumours. With this money we hope to buy some handheld monitors that will reduce the need for staff to carry round large records and machines when a child goes to somewhere like x-ray. These machines can monitor a child's heart rate or measure the amount of oxygen in their blood."

Steve Rushton, charitable fund manager at UHNS, said:

"Raising money to support the Cheethams children's wards is hugely important to the hospital. Donations like this really do make such a difference and a sum like £3,000 is a lot of money. We would like to say thank you to Dudson Ltd and reassure them that the equipment they have donated will go a long way to helping the children cared for at our hospital. The company should be applauded for their hard work and generous support. I'm sure the parents of children staying at Cheethams will see staff using the handheld monitors that have been purchased with this donation."
