Hospital staff take three peak challenge for patient therapy suite
Date : - 12/09/2009

Health Support Workers at local mental health unit take the Yorkshire three peak challenge to raise funds for patient therapy suite.

Tara Hill and Kate Gye both work at Leeds based acute mental health unit the Becklin Centre of Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust. The pair see firsthand the benefits of the therapy suite to patients at the centre and are keen to raise funds for extra resources by taking the 26 mile hike.

The suite offers a variety of therapeutic, relaxing activities for individuals to come and express themselves through art, cookery, reflective writing, music and lots more. Therapeutic activities are a key part of every patients care plan which also addresses issues such as physical health needs, mental health needs, housing, activities of daily living and any other area the service user feels will support their recovery. Support in recovery often takes the form of therapeutic activity like those provided in the therapy suite.

Tara Hill, Health Support Worker at the Becklin Centre said, “I have worked at the Becklin Centre as a Health Support Worker for over three years now. In the first instance I decided to become a health support worker on graduating at Leeds Metropolitan University with a degree in Counselling and Therapeutic Studies.

I very much enjoy my work here at the Becklin Centre, it is by no means the easiest job in the world but it is very rewarding. I love working with the people here and find my work a very worthy cause.

Kate and I decided to take on the three peak challenge because we both see on a day-to-day basis the value in the therapy suite. Therapeutic activity is extremely beneficial to a patient’s journey to recovery. If we can help to raise even a little money towards the suite then this will be a very worth hike.”

Kate Gye, Health Support Worker at the Becklin Centre said, “The work at the therapy suite truly makes a difference to a patient’s recovery. As a member of staff at the Becklin Centre I see firsthand the difference in individuals on admission to the centre and after sessions of therapy at the suite. The therapy suite is second to none and any further assistance I can provide be it providing funding for extra resources or moral support for patients I am happy to help out wherever possible. We very much appreciate any support.”

This classic hike is a tough challenge which incorporates the three highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales. The challenge is due to take place on Sunday 13th September, if you would like to sponsor Kate and Tara, please go to our website www.leedspft.nhs.uk or call (0113) 305 5976 for more information.
