Haddon House Day Hospital
NGH leads the way in providing more time for nursing care
Date : - 14/08/2009
Northampton General Hospital staff are leading the way in an NHS initiative to increase the amount of time that nursing staff can spend with patients.

A national programme called ‘Releasing Time to Care – The Productive Ward’ was launched two years ago by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. The programme is underpinned by ‘lean’ principles, and focuses on improving ward processes by removing repetitive and wasteful tasks which add no value to the patients’ experience.

NGH director of service improvement Sue Stanley says: “The overall aim of the Productive Ward programme is to increase the amount of time ward staff spend on direct patient care. It helps to improve safety, increase patient satisfaction and improve people’s hospital experience.”

The hospital launched a pilot of the programme on three of its wards in 2008, and found that time spent on direct nursing care on those wards increased by 16 per cent within six months. Interruptions to nursing staff fell by almost a half, shift handover was vastly improved – and improved work flows led to an estimated reduction of 734 miles of walking for nurses!

Sue continues: “We have learned that standardising important processes can have a big impact on quality, safety and reliability of care. As a result we have decided that all remaining wards will work through the programme together, so we can standardise good practice as we go.

“We have set ourselves an ambitious target of implementing the Productive Ward programme across all our wards in 14 months, whereas the normal time is 18 months. And as far as I am aware we are the only trust taking this ‘whole hospital’ approach with all wards going through it at the same time. We are confident that this will have a positive and measurable effect on the quality of care we provide at NGH.”
