Columbus Regional Announces Selection of Architect for Women and Children's Center
Date : - 08/09/2009
A nationally recognized architectural firm specializing in a “healing experiences” approach to designing health care facilities has been selected to design the new Columbus Regional Women and Children’s Center, officials announced today. The proposal presented by Kahler Slater, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wis., was selected over nine other proposals received during an extensive search process.

The announcement was made in the Columbus Regional Conference Center at The Medical Center. Physicians and community leaders joined Columbus Regional leadership and Women and Children’s project committee members for the announcement.

“We are delighted with the selection of Kahler Slater for this project,” said Lance B. Duke, FACHE, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Columbus Regional Healthcare System and president and CEO of The Medical Center. “This firm is uniquely qualified to lead the development of a comprehensive center that will serve women across the life span and children from birth through age 21.”

Duke cited the vast experience of Kahler Slater and the firm’s unique and transformational approach to the design process. The firm was established in 1908 and today has 130 employees with offices in Wisconsin, North Carolina and Singapore.

Kahler Slater has a national reputation for campus master planning, replacement hospitals and major additions such as comprehensive women and children’s programs. The firm’s clients include Aurora Women’s Pavilion in West Allis, Wis., which is recognized as the nation’s # 1 benchmark for comprehensive women’s health services; Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, which has the #1 patient satisfaction results in the country as measured by Press Ganey, the leader in patient satisfaction research; and National University Hospital in Singapore, a world leader in translational research.

“We are excited about the opportunity to work with the Columbus Regional team to further define their vision and develop a comprehensive women and children’s program here,” said Jennifer Schlimgen, AIA, principal with Kahler-Slater and one of the project leaders. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to design positively memorable experiences that the women and children of this community, and the broader Columbus region, will tell their friends and family about for generations to come,” she added. “We are looking forward to partnering with Columbus Regional to create the new national benchmark in women and children’s health.”

Kahler Slater specializes in an integrated approach to “Designing Healing
Experiences TM”, according to Schlimgen. “We believe the experiences and environments we create to support health care should leave patients and their families, visitors, physicians and staff refreshed, renewed and inspired,” she said. This unique approach to planning and design brings many activities and participants into the process to gain the best possible input and innovation, Schlimgen added. “A broad array of constituents – from physicians to hospital staff to community members – will participate and be partners in this process.”

On May 27, Columbus Regional officials announced plans to develop a comprehensive women and children’s center. The new center will consolidate services for women and children currently offered at The Medical Center and Doctors Hospital. The cost of the project has not been determined, but is expected to exceed $30 million. The new center will provide coordinated and integrated services for women and children.

A decision has not been made on the location of the center, but it will involve a major addition and renovation to either The Medical Center or Doctors Hospital. Decisions on location, design and construction services should be made in late 2009, with construction beginning in 2010. The center is expected to open in 2011.
