Durham Regional Hospital Physician Performs Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery with Robot |
Date : - 28/10/2008 |
Durham, NC- A Durham Regional Hospital urologist is among the first to perform a urinary bladder procedure using single incision laparoscopic surgery with robotic assistance. Brian Evans, MD, performed a bladder stone extraction and reconstruction through a single incision, approximately two inches across, just above the patient's belly button.
The surgery was performed Wednesday, October 22 using the da Vinci Surgical System robot and took approximately 90 minutes. The patient was sent home the next day with barely a scar to show for it.
"I chose this approach with the patient in mind. Patients benefit from the least invasive procedure possible," says Evans. "Less pain, quicker recovery and better cosmetic outcomes are all major advantages of single incision and laparoscopy in general."
Single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is laparoscopic surgery performed through a small single incision on the patient's abdomen, as opposed to typical laparoscopic surgery with four small five to 12 millimeter incisions, or typical single incision surgery with one large eight inch incision.
"I combined the single incision and robotic technique," says Evans. "It is an evolution of proven laparoscopic techniques, not an altogether new technique, but an improvement in how we perform surgery. This is a very rapidly evolving area and a subject of intense interest in surgery."
Evans performed the SILS using the da Vinci Surgical System robot. The robot offers three dimensional vision with 12 times the magnification and articulating instruments that allow the surgeon to have a range of motion which surpasses a human wrist. This results in superior visualization and a greater ability to perform very complex maneuvers within a confined space.
"I believe that single incision surgery is the future of surgery," says Evans. "Combining the benefit of robotics allows us to provide superior care and add precision to the procedures as well as allow for performing more complex procedures."
Physicians at Durham Regional Hospital use the da Vinci Surgical System for laparoscopic urological procedures, minimally invasive gynecologic procedures and weight loss surgery.
