HARTFORD, Conn.— Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center’s integrated Level I adult and pediatric trauma center—known as The Trauma Institute—has received its trauma center designation from the Connecticut Department of Public Health. Earlier this month, The Trauma Institute received its verification notice from the American College of Surgeons—the verifying agency for DPH.
Lenworth Jacobs, MD, director of trauma for the Trauma Institute, said trauma is the leading cause of death of American children between the ages of 1 and 18. Connecticut adopted a statewide trauma system in 1995 that requires seriously injured patients under age 13 to be taken to a Level I facility with immediate access to pediatric subspecialists, and resources which include an 18 bed pediatric intensive care unit and state of the art operating suites.
“The ACS has never seen a system like The Trauma Institute,” Dr. Jacobs said. “Our program is unique, with the entire campus acting as one big trauma center with two separate institutions treating adults and children.”
“This verification is a significant accomplishment for Connecticut Children’s,” said Brendan Campbell, MD, MPH, director of pediatric trauma at Connecticut Children’s. “This designation illustrates the high quality of care we deliver to injured children, and our role as a national leader in trauma-related education and injury prevention research.”
A verification visit by the ACS Committee on Trauma took place on Sept. 7 and 8. The visit included a comprehensive medical record review, assessment of patient care systems at both institutions, and interviews with staff.
The Trauma Institute brings greater research and academic focus to the treatment of injured children, the education of trauma personnel, and the prevention of injuries. Preparation for trauma center verification provided the impetus for numerous infrastructure enhancements which will positively impact all children cared for at Connecticut Children’s.
Mild to moderately injured patients have been coming to Connecticut Children’s, however critically-injured children go to Hartford Hospital because of the availability of on-site 24/7 trauma care resources and state statutes requiring evaluation at a Level I or II trauma center. Although the majority of pediatric trauma cases will now be transported directly to Connecticut Children’s, some of the more severe cases will still be transported to Hartford Hospital’s Emergency Department. Hartford Hospital maintains the state’s only air ambulance system, LIFE STAR. |
