Hoag Hospital has earned both the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers and The American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Gold Performance Achievement Award. Hoag earned the Joint Commission distinction, which offered no suggestions for improvement, after the organization conducted an unannounced on-site review in January.
“Hoag demonstrated that its stroke care program follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients,” says Jean E. Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q., executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, Joint Commission.
Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke ever 45 second and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.
“We’re proud to achieve the distinction,” says David Brown, MD, medical director of Hoag’s Stroke Program, a program within Hoag Neurosciences Center. “Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes Hoag’s commitment to providing outstanding care to our patients and our community.”
The Joint Commission’s Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association’s statements/guidelines for stroke care. The Joint Commission launched the program—the nation’s first—in 2003.
To receive the GWTG-Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award, Hoag Hospital consistently maintained a high level of performance for at least two years, complying with the requirements in the GWTG–Stroke program, which include aggressive use of “clot busting” medications like tPA, anticoagulation therapy, followed by important supportive acute rehabilitation physical and speech therapy -if needed - and evidence- based supportive care such as pneumonia prevention, prophylaxis against deep vein thrombosis, cholesterol reducing drugs, and smoking cessation education.

“The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke incidence and a large aging population,” said Dr. Brown. “Hoag is well equipped and committed to providing the highest level of stroke care to this growing patient population. And our recent certifications further confirm that we are among the best stroke centers in the nation in our compliance with implementation of evidence-based therapies for acute stroke, which help to ensure the best outcomes for stroke patients.”
