St. Mary’s Medical Center of Campbell County Named One of the Nation's 100 Top Hospitals by Thomson
Date : - 24/03/2009
St. Mary’s Medical Center of Campbell County has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Healthcare, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.

The 2007 Thomson 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success study results appeared in the March 17 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine. The award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance, efficiency, and growth in patient volume.

Located in LaFollette, St. Mary’s Medical Center of Campbell County is a 66-bed acute care hospital that offers a full array of medical services such as a 24-hour emergency department, general surgery and state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment like MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, x-ray and mammography.

“I am thrilled for our physicians, nurses and support staff for winning this award,” said Alan Watson, CEO of the facility. “This award demonstrates the commitment of all our associates to providing the highest quality healthcare to the people of LaFollette and the surrounding community.

“From discovery to recovery, the physicians, nurses and support staff at the medical center work together as a team to help achieve the best medical outcomes for our patients,” Watson added.

Watson said that the staff at the medical center has concentrated on two areas in improving the outcomes for patients at the medical center.

“First, an improvement plan was implemented to meet the Medicare standards for quality in the core measurement areas. These include best practices for treating cardiac problems and pneumonia.

“The second area of focus was concentrating on patient safety. The staff has gone to great lengths to ensure that the hospital complies with all the national patient safety goals in areas like preventing falls in the hospital and preventing infections,” Watson added.

Mercy Health Partners CEO for Community Hospitals, Jack Bryan, said he is particularly honored to have St. Mary’s Medical Center of Campbell County on the list of Thomson 100 Top Hospitals Award for National Benchmarks for Success as it measures performance in both clinical areas and support functions across the entire hospital.

“This means we are achieving or surpassing national standards in providing high quality healthcare,” Bryan said.

Thomson assigned each hospital in the study group to one of five comparison groups according to bed size, teaching status, and residency program involvement. The key findings of the study show that the 100 Top Hospitals have higher survival rates, keep more patients complication-free and attract more patients.
