Stamford Hospital's Mobile Mamography Receives $50K Grant From Susan G. Komen Connecticut Affiliate
Date : - 20/08/2009
The Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $50,000 grant to Stamford Hospital's Mobile Mammography, which serves the region's uninsured and underinsured women.

The Komen for the Cure grant will support Mobile Mammography's mission to screen and educate women regardless of income or background. The hospital service includes screenings for 325 women, breast health awareness, and follow-up care for women with abnormal or normal/abnormal results.

"The single most important benefit of Mobile Mammography is to save lives from breast cancer through early detection," said Joan Biagarelli, Stamford Hospital's Manager of Mobile Mammography. "We have found that the more women are educated and receive mammograms, the higher the rate of early diagnosis and detection. The funds from this grant will help us in this lifesaving mission."

Funds from the grant will help target medically underserved women who would not otherwise be screened because they are in need of financial assistance. Additionally, Mobile Mammography assists hard-to-reach groups, including working poor women, single mothers, older women, women in inner cities and minorities including Hispanic, Haitian and African-American women.

The grant will also support Mobile Mammography's outreach initiatives. Community health agencies, churches and civic organizations are targeted as well as community leaders. Additionally, the program offers bilingual outreach support, and promotional materials in multiple languages.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest breast cancer organization, and the Connecticut Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.

"At the Komen Connecticut Affiliate, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered the need this grant meets," said Anne Morris, Executive Director. "We are confident that through Stamford Hospital's Mobile Mammography, the underinsured and uninsured women in our community will have access to the care they need."

Stamford Hospital launched Mobile Mammography 13 years ago in response to a community need for mammograms. The program has a dedicated staff for outreach, education and screening. Each year, Mobile Mammography travels to 30 sites in 30 communities to offer free mammography screenings to uninsured, underinsured and underserved women. The service's recall letter system yields a high 85 percent return rate for patients in need of annual testing. Free follow-up care is offered for patients who require further imaging.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and the Komen Connecticut Affiliate
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. The Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1993 to fund research and better the lives of those facing breast cancer in the local community by supporting local organizations that focus on breast health issues and access to care. Seventy-five percent of net proceeds from the Affiliate stay in the community to fund local breast health programs and in 2009 alone, the Affiliate granted $871,000 to fund breast health programs at organizations throughout Connecticut.
