History Of Columbus Regional Hospital

** Our History **
Columbus Regional Hospital did not spring up overnight, but rather evolved from a proud history of serving our area's health needs as Bartholomew County Hospital.

Bartholomew County Hospital held the distinction as the first county hospital to be constructed under a 1913 Indiana law enabling counties to issue bonds for building a hospital sufficient to serve the local community. The original Board of Trustees was appointed in 1915, and within two years land was acquired, a 32-bed facility constructed and the doors opened to patients on February 6, 1917.

Bartholomew County Hospital's first employee was Miss Edith Weller, RN, of Mentesano, Washington, who was selected as superintendent. The first birth to take place was that of Mildred Beatrice Cummins, born on July 7, 1917, the daughter of Clessie L. Cummins, co-founder of Cummins Engine Company, and Ethel Cummins. Dr. George McCoy, father of Ethel, delivered his granddaughter.

From its formative years through its first 50 years of evolution, Bartholomew County Hospital grew steadily adding services, skilled staff and buildings to provide care for patients.

A major building project in the mid-1960's coupled with an increase in the medical staff, including the addition of several specialists, turned the direction of the hospital outside Bartholomew County. In 1983, the federal government's Medicare program recognized the hospital as a Regional Referral Center, one of 150 hospitals so classified in the nation. We were among the very first to receive this classification.

In early 1990, ground was broken for a building renovation and services expansion program. The architectural plan combined renovations of the best of existing buildings with new construction to create a modern medical campus. The award-winning and internationally-recognized architectural firm of Robert A.M. Stern of New York designed the new facility.

Our hospital officially changed its name to Columbus Regional Hospital on September 25, 1992 following a building renovation and services expansion program.

The hospital has had strong board leadership throughout our history, from the days when the hospital was first being built, to guiding the growth and innovation that has made us a regional medical center. Our current Board of Trustees includes: W. George Brueggemann, MD, Tom Lentz, John Nash, Hutch Schumaker, Tracy Souza, and Bob Stewart.

Whenever the Columbus Regional Hospital history is examined the one theme which runs through is that of providing high quality, compassionate care. We are proud of the employees, physicians and volunteers who have greatly contributed to make Columbus Regional Hospital into what we are today.
