History Of Duncan Regional Hospital
** Our History **
The support from communities within Stephens County has been the tradition of Duncan Regional Hospital since its inception in 1977.
Duncan Regional Hospital has a state-wide reputation as one of the premiere Oklahoma hospitals for medical excellence, advanced technology and nationally recognized high levels of patient satisfaction.
The hospital is located in southwest Oklahoma in the city of Duncan. Duncan Regional Hospital is a 167-bed nationally accredited hospital.
The Beginnings
Duncan Regional Hospital has a unique history. Community commitment and support that led to the construction of a new, 148-bed hospital with primary funding coming from private and local business sources.
The Planning
The provision of hospital services in Duncan changed dramatically on January 17, 1977, when Duncan Regional Hospital, Inc. purchased all of the physical assets of three privately owned Duncan hospitals: Lindley Hospital, Medical Center Hospital, and Physician and Surgeons Hospital.
For many years these three for-profit institutions had aptly served the medical needs of the community. However, in 1975, community leaders realized that the healthcare resources of these small, aging facilities were not able to keep up with the area's industrial progress.
The Duncan Chamber of Commerce formed a task force to advance healthcare services and to recruit physicians to Stephens County. In November 1975, this task force recommended that the three facilities be merged into a single non-profit corporation-a recommendation that eventually led to the formation of Duncan Regional Hospital, Inc. on January 17, 1977.
No single individual has ownership of Duncan Regional Hospital. The hospital itself is the legal entity, which wholly owns all of the assets of Duncan Regional Hospital and is a charitable, not-for-profit, non-stock corporation.
