About Washington Hospital Center

Washington Hospital Center is the largest private hospital in the nation's capital. The Hospital Center was founded in March 1958, when three specialty hospitals merged to form a single institution. The not-for-profit hospital is a proud member of the MedStar Health network and shares a 47-acre campus with three medical facilities in Northwest Washington, D.C.

The Hospital Center facility has 926 licensed beds and offers primary, secondary and tertiary health care services to adult and neonatal patients. During fiscal year 2008 (FY08), 398,308 outpatient and 44,598 inpatient visits occurred at the hospital, including 4,910 births. Nearly 90 regional medical facilities referred close to 6,700 of their most complicated medical cases to Washington Hospital Center in this year. The Hospital Center employs one of the region's most experienced medical/dental and surgical staff numbering 1,600 physicians, many of whom are involved in more than 400 clinical research trials underway; its 26 clinical residency and fellowship programs attract more than 300 medical students annually.

Washington Hospital Center's premiere program in cardiovascular services is among the top 20 centers in the U.S., with volumes of 9,110 inpatient cardiac admissions, 21,763 cardiac catheterizations, 8,295 electrophysiology procedures, 1,814 open-heart surgeries, three heart transplants and 18 implantations of ventricular assist devices in FY08. The Hospital Center's V entricular Assist Device Program is the only facility in Washington accredited by The Joint Commission. More than 150 heart transplants have been performed at the Hospital Center since its first procedure on May 22, 1987.

In addition, the Hospital Center is a respected top facility in treatment of stroke, neurological illness and injury, gastrointestinal disorders and women's services. This fiscal year, U.S.News & World Report recognized Washington Hospital Center as one of the nation's “Best Hospitals” for heart and heart surgery, endocrine disorders, respiratory and geriatric care. The Hospital Center's Primary Stroke Center admitted 535 patients and is the first stroke program in the area accredited by The Joint Commission. Through its affiliation with the National Institutes of Health Stroke Center, the hospital's stroke neurologists have access to cutting edge research protocols not available at other hospitals. Its adult burn center, recognized as a national model in burn care therapies and the region's only facility, treated 377 patients in this year.

Comprehensive oncology care makes The Washington Cancer Institute (WCI) at Washington Hospital Center the preferred treatment facility for more cancer patients than any other program in the nation's capital. In FY08, the Cancer Institute saw 76,464 outpatient visits, diagnosed 2,494 new cancer cases and was chosen by 15,016 patients who came through its Center for Breast Health. WCI provides the full range of surgical, radiation and medical oncology services, access to the latest clinical trials, patient and family counseling, cancer education and community outreach programs.

The Hospital Center's kidney and pancreas transplantation programs are in the top five percent in the country, with patient outcomes that consistently exceed the national average. During this fiscal year, 86 kidney transplants and three kidney/pancreas transplants were performed.

The Hospital Center's most far-reaching presence is MedSTAR Transport. The air ambulance service has carried 46,624 patients since its inception in 1983 and in FY08 flew 3,121 helicopter missions. The MedSTAR Trauma program is one of the nation's most advanced Level I shock/trauma units and is consistently recognized by The American College of Surgeons. In this year, there were 2,445 trauma admissions and 78,549 Emergency Department visits which included 19,059 patient admissions .

Washington Hospital Center is committed to providing care to the underserved in its community. In this fiscal year, the Hospital Center provided $95.9 million in unsponsored care, a combination of $29.6 million in charity care and $66.3 million in bad debt.
