Shall I be safe while traveling to abroad?

Your safety while traveling to a particular destination depends on how much you know about the political and climatic conditions of that region.  Make it a point that before planning your trip, you know the latest scenario of that country both in terms of political changes, weather changes, currency exchange rates, etc.  Get your vaccinations updated for any diseases that you might get infected with.  Check you financial position before leaving so that you should not run out of finances.  Also, avoid taking cash.  Use traveler’s checks or pay by your card so that you are on the safe side for any theft. In case of emergency, always seek help of the local police so as to avoid any misguidance.  For language barriers, it is preferable to use an interpreter who will help you in your local communications and guidance.  The last but not the least, always be careful of your luggage, documents, money, identity proofs, etc., and do not accept any packages from any strangers.  By following all the above, we are sure you can make yourselves safe while abroad.

Are there any specific directives while traveling abroad?

Yes.  There are specific directives for traveling to certain countries.  Like, if you go to India from June to September, you will have to be prepared for the rainy season and will have to pack your luggage accordingly.  You will also need to get vaccinated for certain diseases that normally spread in that season.  The gist is that the time you are visiting to a particular country matters a lot for your overall planning.  Similarly, if you are going to an African country, be sure about your valuable things, as you may get robbed off your belongings.  Also, if you are a vegetarian, then you must be prepared for it because it is quite tough for vegetarians to survive in African countries.  Also, be confirmed about the political atmosphere while visiting a country.  There are some countries who have their specific directives required for the visitors so before planning confirm about them and then be prepared for whatever comes.

What are the legal requirements while traveling abroad?

While you plan you travel abroad, the first and foremost thing needed is a passport.  If you have one, then check for its validity and if you don’t, then start the proceedings to have one.  The second thing is the visa.  Every country has its own visa laws and you should abide by them.  Make confirmation for any changes in the law.  The third thing is your identification proof.  Always carry your driver’s license or any other identity proof apart from your passport to avoid any misunderstandings.  If you have a minor with you, be sure you have the duly signed date of birth certificate with you.  Apart from all the above three, you may consult your embassy about your planning and may get additional help regarding any other legal formalities.

What about the weather conditions of the destination?

Once you plan on your trip, see that the weather conditions of that particular country suits you.  If you are allergic to any kind of climate changes, then consult your physician.  You must acquaint yourselves to the kind of climate you are going to face while you are in your home country.  Buy your clothing accordingly, so that you should not face problems to deal with the changed weather conditions.

Will I be able to get my specific dietary requirements?

It is not necessary that you will get everything you have as your diet in your native country.  Because you are in a different country with different culture and atmosphere, be prepared for some changes in your diet.  Although, most of the countries do provide international cuisine, but you may face some problems if you are not in a big city as the smaller ones don’t have those facilities available yet or they are scarcely available.  For this, try to get acquainted to the kind of food you will be having while in other country.  You won’t find it interesting initially, but soon you will love the different taste and it will be easier for you to spend your days there.

Do I need vaccines while visiting othercountries?

For some countries you are surely need to get vaccinated.  Because of the climate changes and different topography, every country has some specific diseases that need vaccination.  A person from abroad is not used to such conditions and is highly susceptible to such diseases.  For example, in India, people from abroad are highly susceptible to malaria, typhoid, etc., because of the hot and humid conditions, so they need to get vaccinated before coming and while there also they need to take precautions so that they should not get diseased.  Apart from some specific vaccines, you should update your tetanus shots, in case you are hurt or in a mishap.

How can I contact my embassy or country consulate while abroad?

Always keep a copy of your important documents, such as passport, visa, and other identification documents along with your temporary location in other country with your family members or friends back at your home country.  You should give a full address and details of your hospital and hotel and any emergency call numbers with these documents so that in any emergency they should be able to locate you.  This is the first thing that you must do while you are going abroad.  Now, if you are required to contact the embassy for some reason, you should contact the consular officer on duty there who will assist you.  Most of the countries have their consulate in other countries and the consular officer help the citizens in any trouble.  Like, the US consulate has a 24 x 7 hours services for the US citizens.  They also have an emergency call number to be used by the relatives in case of emergency.  The state department relays the message to the respective consular officer in the specific country and he in turn locates the required person and while maintaining all the privacy, reports back to the family.

What about sightseeing?

Basically, the concept of medical tourism came in existence because of two things; the low cost in other countries and the nice sightseeing that people can enjoy within the expenses and still save money.  So, there is ample of opportunity for your to sightsee while you go for a medical treatment to other countries.  For this, you will have to plan in advance as this will also require a bit of preparation.  Look for any nearby spots where you can visit while you are done with your treatment.  Consult the doctor regarding this and after his permission plan accordingly.  After some treatments, usually it is beneficial going to some hilly area or a seashore so that the rehabilitation takes place nicely in the fresh air; however, it depends on you and your basic physical health and your condition at that time.  But, it is always advisable to do some sightseeing so as to make the trip memorable and get rid of the tensions and anxiety that one usually experiences while undergoing procedures and return back home as fresh as you were while starting off.

What about traveling after surgery?

Traveling immediately after surgery is usually not advisable unless it is a minor one.  One must keep some time in his schedule for recuperation and post-procedure followups to avoid any future problems and clear all the doubts arising out of the procedure.  This is a must while you schedule your trip.  Of course, after you are fine and are certified by the physician to travel and have some time left, you may visit to nearby places or may return back as per your wishes.  But, make it a point that do consult the doctor before starting off and know about all the pros and cons that may occur in case.
