Somerset Pathology Service (SPS), which provides clinical laboratory support to around half a million people in Somerset and beyond, has been improving its service to patients.
As a result of a project to merge the pathology teams based at Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Musgrove Park hospitals, patients have been receiving a better quality, more efficient service with a wider range of tests being undertaken. For example, because of the greater combination of skills available in the reshaped, streamlined service, the laboratories can now provide immunology services (an area of pathology associated with auto immune disorders such as Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis) with samples no longer having to be sent away and faster results.
