Temporary transfer of the Birth Unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital - Information for mums-to-be
Date : - 09/07/2009
The Trust has announced that from Monday, July 13, the Birth Unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital will be temporarily closed and the services it provides moved to the Delivery Suite.

The changes are being made to help to manage the maternity service budget and are expected to last between three and five months.

We would like to reassure all mothers-to-be that the homely atmosphere and environment that has always been provided by the Birth Unit has been re-created in the Delivery Suite. Midwives will continue to support women throughout their labour in a home-from-home, ‘low-tech’ setting to help them achieve a natural, active birth if that is what they wish. Women in labour will continue to have access to a birthing pool and will be able to use all the same equipment (birthing mats, balls, music, low lighting) that was provided in the Birth Unit. Pain relief such as Entenox (gas and air) and aromatherapy will still be available to women who request it as will assistance from medical teams for those who would like pharmalogical (drug-based) pain relief, such as an epidural.

Our priority will always be the safety of women and their babies and for women to be able to have a choice of where to give birth. It is also important for us to deliver these services within our budget.

If you are due to give birth soon, please be assured that there is no reason why your birth plan should change. Our midwives will be providing the same level of care in the Delivery Suite as would have been provided in the Birth Unit.

Please do not hesitate to speak to your community midwife, the Head of Midwifery or one of the midwifery management team if you have any questions.
