Bay Regional Medical Center |
BRMC Ranks in Top 3 U.S. for ICU Nutritional Services |
Date : - 30/11/-0001 |
Of the 157 Intensive Care Units (ICUs) around the world that participated in the International Nutrition survey, sponsored by Critical Care Nutrition, 81 sites were eligible for consideration for the “Best of the Best” award. Bay Regional Medical Center ranked 45th among the overall international competition and was ranked third among the 21 U.S. Hospitals included in the list of 81 sites.
Health practitioners in the ICU at Bay Regional Medical Center are hoping to improve the quality of care received by their critically ill patients by participating in the 2008 International Nutrition Survey.
The prevalence of malnutrition is high in ICUs and has a negative impact on clinical outcomes. Providing patients with the right nutrition improves wound healing, boosts the immune system, and helps the gastrointestinal tract work more effectively, which together favorably influences the chance of surviving critical illness.
In order to participate in the survey each hospital collected data on 20 patients in the ICU. The project involved a survey of nutrition therapies in critically ill patients in ICUs across the world. Data was collected that included site characteristics, patient demographics, direct observational data, baseline APACHE variables, length of stay, duration of ventilation and mortality. In addition, nutrition practices, such as route of nutrition, kilocalorie and protein levels prescribed and received, blood sugars, insulin received and any other supplementation were collected on a daily basis for a maximum of 12 days.
To be eligible the patient needed to be: On the ventilator within 48 hours of admission to the ICU; in the ICU> 3 days; Adult patient >18 years.
The top 3 organizations are:
1. Department of Critical Care Medicine, Auckland City Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand; 2. Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, Canada; and 3. Regional Hospital A. Cardarelli, Italy |
