Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center
Center to Overhaul Health Care Delivery, Business Operations
Date : - 15/06/2009
Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center officials have announced they are embarking on a business plan that will transform health care delivery in Niagara Falls. The focus will be on clinical and business practices to change the way health care is delivered and on improving patient quality, outcomes and access while reducing medical costs.

Under a two-year agreement, the Medical Center leadership and community partners will create a comprehensive business plan, with a $500,000 investment from Independent Health. From the business plan, the medical center will develop and implement clinical, operational and business processes to improve access to quality care and improve patient outcomes.

“We know that health care reform is imminent and that it will require all health care providers to produce better patient outcomes and perform more efficiently by providing the right care, at the right time and in the right place,” said Memorial President & CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo. “We also know we can't do it alone. But we are confident that the support we'll be receiving from Independent Health will better position us to successfully transform Niagara Falls Memorial from a traditional safety net hospital to a reconfigured, patient-centric model of care that combines lean health care, innovative technology and significant community collaboration to align our services with the priorities identified in our quantitative community needs assessment.”

Medical Center and Independent Health officials support state and federal health care reform concepts that will transform traditional hospital services and bring care upstream to where it’s needed most. The reform would provide for a more efficient and affordable health care system that improves access to the kinds of services that keep people healthy and reduces costly inpatient care in favor of more appropriate preventive care.

Similarly, Independent Health is leading the way in transforming how health care is currently delivered. This includes a greater focus on prevention and wellness to minimize the impact on chronic disease, with the goal of providing quality, affordable health care. The funding provides resources to help the hospital transform and meet the unique health care needs of the Niagara Falls area community, which has alarming incidences of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer.

“Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center is taking a proactive approach to change the way health care is delivered to create a preventive driven, patient-centered care delivery system,” said Michael W. Cropp, M.D., president and chief executive officer, Independent Health. “The current delivery model of health care is unsustainable in Niagara Falls and throughout this country and the face of health care must change. The hospital’s new business plan will focus on a health care delivery system that emphasizes prevention, health promotion, early detection and diagnosis that will make a difference in the health of this community.

“The new patient-centered model is the future of health care in this country, but this transformation cannot be done alone. It is a collective responsibility requiring visionary leadership from wide-ranging partnerships to include employers, consumers, community groups and not-for-profit organizations, elected officials and others. It is our hope that this pilot program can serve as a model in other health care reform initiatives.”
