| Digital Mammography Coming to CRH |

Culpeper Regional Hospital (CRH) is enhancing our medical imaging department to include digital mammography in early 2009. Digital mammography studies have shown that this new technology is increasing healthcare providers’ ability to detect breast cancer earlier and it is playing an imperative role in helping them make cancer a manageable disease, according to the National Cancer Institute. In addition, other trial results have shown that women with dense breast tissue, women younger than 50 and women who are perimenopausal may benefit the most.

In addition, other trial results have shown that women with dense breast tissue, women younger than 50 and women who are perimenopausal may benefit the most.
Major benefits of digital mammography are:
1. This advanced approach uses 40 to 50% less radiation than film mammography.
2. The versatility in viewing the captured images is increased greatly, allowing the technician to focus more on the area(s) of concern, not to mention there is better visibility.
3. Trials show an 11% increase in detecting breast cancer in dense breast tissue.
4. Images can now be sent to the physician’s office via broadband internet instead of hand delivering.
For the last year, one of the Culpeper Regional Hospital Foundation’s initiatives has been to raise money for digital mammography. The CRH Auxiliary has recently pledged to support digital mammography by funding the bulk of the project through funds raised at the thrift shop.
