Fisher-Titus Medical Center
FTMC and NOMS/Access Orthopaedics Team Up to Offer Hip Pain Clinic
Date : - 03/05/2009
Living with hip pain is a common complaint among many people. Hip pain can be debilitating and hinder everyday tasks as simple as walking and sleeping. Problems that cause hip pain are given many different names, but no matter what the problem is called, without a remedy, pain can become a part of every day living.

"Hip-related pain is not always felt directly over the hip," said Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Michael Powers of NOMS Healthcare/Access Orthopaedics. "Instead, you may feel it in the middle of your thigh or in your groin. Similarly, pain you feel in the hip may actually reflect a problem in your back, rather than your hip itself."

A hip joint consists of two bones - the femoral head (the ball) and the acetabulum (the socket), Dr. Powers said.

"Usually the joint is well lubricated and the one bone can slide against the other bone with minimal friction," he said. "However, with diseased hips, the cartilage covering the surface of the bone is worn away and we now have a situation in which the bones are rubbing against each other, causing pain and limiting movement. Joints can be destroyed for a variety of reasons, but arthritis is the most common."

Find out more about hip pain and ways to alleviate it during “Is Hip Pain Cramping Your Style? FTMC’s Hip Pain Clinic Can Help” from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at FTMC’s Ralph & Alice Walcher Rehabilitation Center, 272 Benedict Ave., Norwalk.

The upcoming clinic will include a brief presentation by Dr. Powers, who also is a member of Fisher-Titus Medical Center’s medical staff. In addition to the presentation, Dr. Powers will offer one-on-one appointments with attendees to answer individual questions. Other FTMC professional support personnel, including physical therapists, occupational therapists and nurses, will be at the event to provide information and guidance on a variety of topics related to hip pain
