Down syndrome, the most common of all genetic conditions associated with mental retardation, occurs in approximately one out of every 733 births, usually causing delays in physical, intellectual and language development. With appropriate and ongoing medical care, adults with Down syndrome can lead healthy and productive lives.
The Adult Down Syndrome Center, 1999 W. Dempster St., Park Ridge, is a comprehensive medical resource providing care for adults with Down syndrome, with an emphasis on health promotion. The center’s multidisciplinary team has served the health and psychosocial needs of more than 3,000 adolescents and adults with Down syndrome since the center opened in January 1992. For more information about the center, which is a program of Lutheran General Hospital and Advocate Medical Group, see www.advocatehealth.com |
