Heritage Festival is planned for this Saturday |
Date : - 25/09/2008 |
The annual Mountain Heritage Festival will be held this weekend, offering a variety of activities in town for all. Festivities, that are free of charge, will kick off at 9 a.m. and conclude around 4:30 p.m. The festival will lead to the closure of Main Street from Doughton Street to Cheek Street and of N.C. 18 from Grayson Street to the U.S. 21 bypass (Sparta Parkway).
The daylong event will feature 100-plus vendors selling food, art, and a variety of crafts. As with years past, two stages—found at either side of the event—passers-by will find entertainment of sorts.
Meanwhile, Sparta native and WBRF-FM 98.1 radio personality J.D. Higgins will broadcast his "Country Gold" program live at the festival from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. While Higgins formed the band Country Express, and produced a number of music shows in northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia, he is best known for producing the Homecoming Show for fellow Alleghany native and Grand Old Opry Star Del Reeves, who died last year.
While visitors make their way up and down Main Street in Sparta, they will have the opportunity to eye the antique tractors, restored autos on display by the Mountaintop Cruisers, watch apple cider being made in front of Sparta United Methodist Church, watch the Boy Scout Regatta in the yard of First Baptist Church, see the work of a chainsaw carver in action and watch or take part in a freestyle skateboard competition.
This year, most children's activities, including a bounce house and pony rides, will be centered around the area of First Baptist Church of Sparta.
Live music and dance performances will be found at two stages. One, being the "North Stage," located at the intersection of U.S. 21 (Main Street) and N.C. 18 (Whitehead Street) at the Alleghany Courthouse, and the second being the "South Stage" being located in the parking lot of former county building at 90 South Main St. In previous years, the South stage had been located near the Kangaroo Express on Main Street near the intersection with Cheek Street, and the new locale is in response to concerns expressed to the Chamber.
Entertainment will begin on the North Stage at 10 a.m. and the South Stage at 11 a.m. The schedule includes: North Stage—10 a.m. Mountain Park Old Time Band; 11:15 a.m. Uncle Nave & the Cranberry Creek Boys; 12:05 p.m., Hillbilly Wes (comedy); 12:45 p.m. Mountain Park Old Time Band; 1:30 p.m., Jubilee Dancers; 2:15 p.m., Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM); 2:50 p.m., Rise and Shine Band; and 3:45 p.m. Possum Queen Contest, featuring the Rise and Shine Band. South Stage—11 a.m. 'N Step Dancers; 11:45 a.m. Naomi's Fancy; 12:45 p.m. Alleghany Moon; 1:45 p.m. Alleghany Moon; 2:45 p.m. Naomi's Fancy.
