Intermountain Hospitals hold free prostate screening clinics for high-risk men |
Date : - 06/09/2008 |
* Salt Lake City —Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death among men with cancer in the United States, however, because it is mostly a slow growing cancer that starts in the gland cells of the prostate, it can often be found early by testing the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood.
As part of National Prostate Cancer Awareness month, Intermountain Healthcare's Alta View Hospital, LDS Hospital and Intermountain Medical Center are sponsoring free prostate screenings during the month of September for men who are at highest risk for prostate cancer.
The dates and locations for the free prostate screening clinics are:
* Wednesday, September 10, 5 to 7:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Jon and Karen Huntsman Cancer Center at Intermountain Intermountain Medical Center (5121 South Cottonwood Street, Murray)
* Tuesday, September 16, 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the medical office plaza just east of LDS Hospital (370 9th Avenue, Suite 208, Salt Lake City)
* Tuesday, September 23, 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the Surgical Center at Alta View Hospital (9660 South 1300 East, Sandy)
The free screening clinics are designed for men who have a family history of prostate cancer, men age 50 and over, men with no insurance or limited insurance, and African American men. The free screenings will include a prostate-specific antigen blood test and a digital rectal exam.
* Why it's important to get screened for prostate cancer: According to the American Cancer Society, one out of every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer found in men, other than skin cancer. Experts also say that approximately 186,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during 2008.
* How to make an appointment: To schedule an appointment for one of the free prostate screenings, please call 507-3800. Space is limited. Call early to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins will not be accommodated. If you have insurance and wish to schedule a prostate screening, check with your insurer to see what they cover for preventive screenings. Then be sure to call 507-3800 and schedule an appointment on another day for a screening.
