Orthopedic Joint Center of Northern California Offers New Technique in Shoulder Surgery that Allows |
Date : - 09/04/2009 |
Willits - The surgeons at The Orthopedic Joint Center of Northern California (The Joint Center) at Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital, Dr. Stephen Gunther and Dr. William Bowen, have designed minimally invasive implants for fractures of the clavicle and radius that allow patients to recover more quickly from shoulder surgery.
“Having your shoulder replaced used to mean a week in the hospital, and a year to fully recover with limited results,” commented Dr. Gunther, head shoulder surgeon at The Joint Center. “With new, better designed implants, and minimally invasive surgical techniques, patients only require 1-2 days in the hospital, and they recover much better.”
Shoulder replacement surgery fell into the national spotlight recently when Lance Armstrong took a serious fall. Lance flew back to Texas from Europe for surgery. A long plate with 12 separate screws was placed in his clavicle. This is one of the standard treatments. New treatments designed in Willits, California, utilize a flexible rod inside the bone through much smaller incisions in order to minimize soft tissue trauma and facilitate quicker recovery. The minimally invasive shoulder surgery helps reduce pain, suffering, and disability.
The Joint Center specializes in world class joint replacement, including hip replacement, knee replacement, elbow replacement, spine surgery, fracture care, and sports medicine. Shoulder services include special custom implants for severe arthritis and reverse ball implants for rotator cuff deficient shoulders. In most geographic areas, many of these services are only offered at the big University hospitals. In fact, Dr. Gunther directed the shoulder and elbow services at UCSF in San Francisco for four years, and continues to teach on a national level. Dr. Bowen teaches at UC Davis and Loma Linda University. The surgeons at The Joint Center are leaders in innovation and patient care.
The Joint Center’s goal is to make every patient feel cared for as if they were staying in their own home. Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital is a friendly, hometown environment and serves the population of multiple northern California communities, as well as hosting patients from other states and countries.
