Piedmont Newnan Hospital Encourages Community Members to Get Tested and Take Control of Their Choles
Date : - 09/09/2009
According to the American Heart Association, 98.6 million adult Americans are considered borderline high-risk for high cholesterol. This statistic should not be ignored since cholesterol is one of the main contributors to heart disease, stroke and various other health hazards.

September is Cholesterol Education Month, and Piedmont Newnan Hospital (PNH) is reminding Newnan area residents about the importance of being educated on cholesterol and how to obtain and maintain good cholesterol levels.

A number of factors affect cholesterol levels. Some uncontrollable risk factors for high cholesterol include age, gender and family history. There are, however, many controllable factors including diet, weight and physical activity.

“If not properly controlled cholesterol can build up and form plaque in arteries,” says Leslie Huff, director of Cardiopulmonary Services at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “This can narrow the openings and cause tremendous strain on the heart.”

Regular checkups from your physician, which include cholesterol screenings, are vital to early detection and treatment of potential health issues. Visits with a physician are also a time for patients to ask questions and learn more ways to improve their health between checkups.

A physician will be able to help you make healthier lifestyle choices to combat your specific health concerns. Here are some tips to help with better cholesterol levels every day:

Healthy Eating: Your grocery list can help lower your cholesterol when you include foods such as salmon, tuna, oatmeal, fruits and vegetables.
Labels: Pay attention to nutrition labels and be cautious of saturated and trans fats. These have been linked to raising blood cholesterol levels.
Limit foods that contain “hydrogenated” shortenings as noted on the ingredient label.
Exercise: Daily exercise, even when broken up into 10-15 minute sessions can help to improve your overall cardiovascular health.
