St. Luke’s Boise/Meridian Medical Centers and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center to Limit Visit |
Date : - 18/09/2009 |
To protect young patients from the HINI flu virus, St. Luke’s Boise/Meridian Medical Centers and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center are implementing new visitation rules for their newborn intensive care (NICU), pediatric intensive care (PICU), pediatric and obstetric units. (St. Luke’s obstetric units will remain open to visitors for now).
Effective midnight Friday (tonight), only visitors who are over 18 and immediate family members such as parents (including parents under 18), grandparents, or significant others of un-married patients will be allowed to visit these units.
St. Luke’s and Saint Alphonsus normally enact stricter visitation policies for the seasonal flu season, which typically lasts from December through April. But this year, given the growing number of HINI flu cases, and uncertainty about when the HINI vaccine will be available, the decision was made to put the more restrictive policy in place earlier.
The new policy is a precaution to better protect St. Luke’s and Saint Alphonsus' most at risk patient populations.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, children are one of the populations at most risk to contract the HINI virus. The virus can also be contagious up to two days prior to the onset of symptoms, making it even more critical to limit access to these hospital units.
