"Laughter is the Best Medicine" To Be Theme of Cancer Survivors Day |
Date : - 24/03/2009 |
Middlesex Hospital is sponsoring its annual Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, May 17, 2009, from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Hospital's Cancer Center at 536 Saybrook Road in Middletown.
This year’s theme, “Laughter is the Best Medicine,” will feature special guest Scott Burton, an award-winning comedian and world champion juggler, who is also a cancer survivor. Burton has worked with comedians Jay Leno and Louie Anderson and blends the worlds of comedy, juggling, with his uplifting personal story.
This annual gathering celebrates life and honors the courage of all cancer survivors. It is estimated that there are currently 12 million cancer survivors in the United States. A cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer – this includes newly diagnosed survivors as well as long-term survivors. Family members (especially children), friends and anyone else who plays an important role in a cancer survivor's life are encouraged to attend.
The formal ceremony will feature remarks by Middlesex Hospital oncologist, Michael Farrell, M.D. Three cancer survivors will also share their stories. Special recognition will be given to retired Middlesex Hospital surgeon Dr. Joseph Bardenheier.
All cancer survivors who attend will be given a special gift. There will also be music by A-Sharp, food, raffle prizes and fun activities for children, including face painting and The Magic of Christopher.
