About Mem Hosp And Hlth Care Center

Sponsored by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center employs more than 1,300 people and has more than 150 physicians including 85 on the Active Medical Staff. As a regional health center, the staff provides a comprehensive range of medical care for residents of Dubois and surrounding counties including more than 7,700 inpatients and 172,000 outpatients. Over 1,000 babies were born at Memorial Hospital during the past year, which set the all-time record!

The hospital was recently honored with a “100 Top Hospitals” designation from Solucient, an independent hospital benchmarking organization. Of 6,000 hospitals nationwide, Memorial is one of only a few hospitals to be selected for this distinction, which recognizes performance in nine key measures including clinical outcomes, patient safety, operational efficiency, financial results and service to the community.

Memorial Hospital has also been honored by the Premier healthcare alliance with the 2007 Premier | CareScience Select Practice National Quality Award for superior patient outcomes in both quality and efficiency. It is one of only 49 hospitals nationally, the top one percent of acute inpatient facilities, to be recognized with the Select Practice Award. The data used for determining this award include 16 different clinically relevant indicators of risk, more than any other national quality award or designation. The quality index is calculated by combining the outcome deviations for mortality, morbidity and complications into a single quality measure for each facility. The combined quality and efficiency ratings are used to determine the award recipients.

In addition, Cleverley + Associates listed Memorial Hospital as a “Five-Star Hospital” in its book, 2007 State of the Hospital Industry, which outlines the financial position of the U.S. hospital industry and includes an assessment of the value a hospital adds to its community. Memorial Hospital is listed in the top 20% of non-teaching, small hospitals across the country. The Community Value Index™ is comprised of nine measures evaluating hospital performance in three areas: financial viability and plant reinvestment, hospital cost structure, and hospital charge structure. The index suggests that “a hospital provides value to the community when it is financially viable and is appropriately reinvesting in the facility, maintains a low-cost structure, and has reasonable charges.”

History Of Mem Hosp And Hlth Care Center

** Our History **
In 1945, Dubois County and the city of Jasper set a goal — the construction of a local hospital to relieve the critical shortage of hospital beds in the area. After six years of planning, development and construction, the Dubois County Memorial Hospital, so named as a Memorial in honor of our World War II fighting veterans, opened its doors for patients on July 23, 1951. The original $1,100,000 for construction and design costs came from a number of sources. Two local businessmen donated the land for the structure; three public fund drives were held to raise enough money to qualify for federal grants; and the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary donated a sizable amount of money toward the realization of what had truly become a community project.

When operations began, Memorial Hospital was hailed as one of the finest general hospitals in the state. Known worldwide for their outstanding hospital facilities, the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary were chosen to staff, operate, and maintain this showcase facility as a non-profit corporation. Nine Sisters were on the original staff, and numerous others were added as the Hospital grew. The Hospital was deeded to the Sisters on August 15, 1951. In addition to the Sisters, a large number of lay persons in the community contributed to its operation.

In 1971, a new wing was opened. This four-story, $3 million addition expanded the hospital by 55,000 square feet and increased bed capacity to 131 beds. Space for new and expanded ancillary services was also added. Full time, twenty-four hour Emergency Services began in 1976. In 1978, several Hospital services including Cardiopulmonary Services, the Cafeteria, and the Gift Shop were expanded. In an effort to reflect the breadth and scope of services offered, Memorial Hospital became Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center on August 1, 1979. In July of 1980, the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary moved into a new home, and the former convent was renamed the Memorial Hospital Annex.

As town and area populations grew, the need for additional space became evident. In 1982, the Board of Directors approved an expansion project to alleviate the congestion problems which had developed. After an intensive planning process which lasted until October 1983, a $13.1 million expansion was approved by the State Board of Health. The project added nearly 45,000 square feet of new construction and renovated over 50,000 square feet of existing space. Areas of new construction included: Critical Care, Medical Records, Pharmacy, Food & Nutrition Services, Surgery, Chapel, Volunteer Services and Administrative areas. Renovated areas included: the Psychiatric Unit, the Medical/Surgical Unit, the Skilled Caring Unit, the Emergency Department, the Laundry, and Materials Management. Radiology and Perinatal Services were located in a combination of new and renovated spaces. The expansion was completed and dedicated on October 5, 1986.

Since the 1985 renovation, many Hospital milestones have occurred. An on-site CT scanner was installed in 1987, thanks to a generous contribution from a local benefactor. In 1988, Oncology Services established a clinic in the Medical Arts Building. In 1989, the first full-time Pediatrician joined the staff, and an Occupational Medicine Physician was recruited to become the medical director of IMED, the newly created Industrial Medicine Clinic.

The Hospital celebrated its 40th anniversary in 1991, and with the celebration year came an announcement of another building expansion project due to the tremendous increase in the demand for outpatient services. This building project included the addition of over 37,000 square feet of new space to house Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, an expanded Emergency Department, Radiology’s on-site MRI, and a new Surgery Care wing, as well as a new, 75-space parking lot. In addition, renovations affected 15,000 square feet of hospital space. The project began on May 14, 1992.

Since 1992, other areas of recent expansion include the opening of Regional Kidney Care, a renal dialysis facility; the addition of Home Care Services; formation of a Hospice (now called Family Palliative Care) Program; the development of Nuclear Medicine and Cardiac Catheterization capabilities in Radiology; the addition of a six-bed Pediatric/Adolescent Unit; Neurology Services; Histology Services; and a multi-speciality clinic for dermatology, rheumatology, and neurosurgery.

In the 1990s, the Hospital opened satellite medical clinics in Dale, Shoals, Ferdinand, and Loogootee. Women and Children Services added three Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) rooms, and cosmetic alterations took place in that department as well as the Skilled Caring Center, Laboratory, and Medical Records. In July 1998, the Memorial Pavilion opened. It contains an expanded pre-surgical services area and an outpatient women’s center for mammography, stereotactic biopsy, bone densitometry, and ultrasound. The Hospital’s active medical staff grew to over 60 physicians, more than double the number practicing here in 1990, with 93% of these physicians board certified in their areas of speciality.

In October of 2002, the hospital embarked on its largest expansion project since its opening; the ground breaking for a new six-story (plus lower level), patient tower occurred. The first three levels of the new facility were completed in January 2005 and now house the hospital's Emergency Department, Radiology Services, Critical Care Services, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Chapel. General features of the new patient tower include private rooms, decreased noise level with carpeted corridors and variations in ceiling height, and a hotel-like ambience geared toward the comfort of patients and their families.

The hospital also established interventional cardiology services in July 2004 through the guidance of Dr. William Lehmkuhler, complementing the cardiac catheterization services already in place. The new interventional services include coronary and peripheral angioplasty and stent placement.

A new Inpatient Rehab Center opened in July 2005 on the hospital’s third level (of the Barrett Building) where the Critical Care Services department was previously situated. The 8-bed unit provides intensive rehabilitation for people who have had a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple trauma, fracture of the hip or femur, amputation, joint replacement surgery, or have a degenerative and progressive neurological disorder such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis.

Other new services include a Wound Center, Angina Heart Therapy/EECP Treatment Center, Wellness Coaching, and Bariatric Surgery. The Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center opened in March 2007 and became affiliated with Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. In April 2007, the newly constructed Levels 4 & 5 of the LCM Tower were opened to Medical, Post-Surgical, and Pediatric patients and a new 64-slice CT (computerized tomography) scanner with advanced cardiac capabilities was installed in the Radiology Department. Just two months later in June, a new Urgent Care Center opened in Huntingburg.

As a regional health center with more than 1,300 employees, Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center serves nine rural counties in southern Indiana.

Annually, Memorial Hospital provides medical care for more than 7,700 inpatients and 172,000 outpatients including nearly 30,000 patients in the Emergency Department. More than 1,000 babies were born at Memorial Hospital during the past year, which was an all-time record.

The hospital has received three national recognitions in recent years including the 2004 Solucient 100 Top Hospitals® Award; the 2007 Premier Select Practice National Quality Award; and the 2007 “Five-Star Hospital” designation.
