Crozer-Chester Medical Center
Phillie Phanatic’s visit brings a smile to burn victim’s face
Date : - 21/07/2009
UPLAND — A welcome fit for a rock star took place Monday afternoon at Crozer-Chester Medical Center when the Phillie Phanatic showed up at the hospital to visit a 9-year-old fan in Crozer’s Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center.

The fuzzy green giant, who stands 7 feet, 3 inches tall from the top of his elongated head to the tip of his rather large sneakers, wowed scores of hospital personnel, visitors and patients as he waited in a hallway outside the burn unit to pay a surprise visit to Nathan Foreman of Honeybrook, Chester County, who was burned on his chest, arms and stomach area in a camp fire accident last month. As everyone waited for Nathan to appear, the Phillies mascot swooped around the hallway, bestowing hugs and kisses on anyone not hiding inside an office, and even then, they weren’t safe. What the Phanatic wants, the Phanatic gets.

After about 15 minutes of hijinks by the Phanatic, word came down that Nathan didn’t want to come out. So the Phanatic was taken to Nathan’s room. But the youngster, whose mother, Linette Foreman, said he had a new IV line put in a few hours earlier and wasn’t feeling very well, held a pillow in front of his face in spite of pleas from sisters Halee, 12, and Nicolle, 11, to look and see who was standing in the doorway of his room.

“He was just upset,” Nicolle said.

So the Phanatic left the burn unit without a meeting with his young fan.

But a hospital spokesman said the Phanatic wisely decided to wait in a nearby office before getting out of his costume to see if Nathan had a change of heart. And he did. Nathan and the Phanatic did meet in the boy’s room.

John Foreman said his son, who plays Little League baseball, is a big Phillies fan. Just three days after arriving at the burn unit, friends contacted the Phillies organization about Nathan’s accident and the club sent a gift package to the boy containing a World Series Championship hat, a rally towel and an autographed picture of Shane Victorino.

“He’s been to Phillies games. He is absolutely a Phillies fan,” said Linette Foreman, adding that friends also arranged the Phanatic’s visit.

Nathan’s mother said her son is expected to be released from the hospital at the end of the week.

But she notes the Honeybrook Elementary School student is in for long-term physical therapy.
