About LONDON VISION CLINIC - Eye Surgery Hospital
|
Knowledge dispels fear
If fear of the unknown didn't stand in the way... most people
would make the choice to see clearly without the aid of glasses
or contact lenses. Whether you are longsighted (hyperopia),
shortsighted (myopia), have astigmatism, or just need reading
glasses (presbyopia), Consultant Ophthalmologist, Professor
Dan Reinstein could reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses
and contact lenses. In fact, not one of Professor Reinstein's
patients has left his care with anything less than driving standard
vision (without spectacles).
So, why are you still wearing glasses and contact lenses?
There are a few reasons to continue wearing glasses and contact
lenses, but there are far more compelling reasons for wanting
to get rid of them. The most common ones we hear are:
- My glasses steam up/streak with the weather
- I am intolerant of contact lenses and heavy glasses
- Maintaining my contact lenses is a bother
- I would like to feel more confident and attractive
- Sports are dangerous because of my glasses
- I would like to wake up and see my wife without having
to reach for my glasses
From golfing and swimming to driving and shopping, you could
enjoy more freedom in your everyday life by restoring your natural
vision. Gaining the freedom and security you want is actually
quite easy. Laser vision correction is a pain-free process that
takes only 20 minutes, and has less than 60 seconds of laser
time per eye.
At the London Vision Clinic safety is an obsession.
That may seem like a strong statement, but we really, really,
want to emphasize our point. In expert hands laser eye surgery
can be an extremely safe, life enhancing experience. More than
100,000 procedures will be done in the UK this year. However,
as health care is not a commodity, it pays to do your homework.
There are differences between clinics. You want to be sure you're
receiving the expert level of safety and care that you deserve.
As a potential patient, you are trying to determine whether
laser vision correction is a suitable tool to help you see better.
Most people are looking to reduce or eliminate their dependence
on glasses and contact lenses. As a clinic, we are trying to
demonstrate to you that we do EVERYTHING in our power to help
you see better by following strict SAFETY protocols. This sometimes
includes determining that you are not a safe candidate for the
procedure, or putting off your surgery until we can do further
safety testing.
How can any laser eye surgeon go the "extra mile"?
Our safety testing includes providing our patients with a revolutionary
technology called Artemis that can measure your cornea with
the precision of one micron. No other technology in this field
has this level of precision.
To our knowledge, we are currently the only users of this technology
in the UK. Although it is expensive technology (about half the
cost of the laser itself), we believe that it is our responsibility
to offer this to our patients. It most definitely provides unique
information that improves the safety of refractive surgery.
Of course, millions of laser procedures have been performed
world-wide before the availability of the Artemis, but this
new sophisticated diagnostic tool provides the ultimate back-stop
in helping us assess our patients before and after surgery.
Like with all newest technology being introduced, different
providers will believe that the previous standard (pre-Artemis)
is totally adequate. We feel that even if it only makes a significant
difference in a proportion of our patients, it is worth having
at our fingertips.
How can you have confidence in our results?
Beyond the Artemis, we have used extensive research and investigation
to choose the technological components we operate with. In fact,
we draw from what we believe to be the best optimal components
available from many different companies, including Carl Zeiss
Meditec, Bausch & Lomb, Ultralink, Tomey and others.
Finally, our surgical protocols were established in North America
and were used to perform over 180,000 procedures, with published
safety and vision outcomes in the largest study of it's kind,
which described the results of over 20,000 eyes treated.1
We routinely re-treat patients that wished they had come to
us first; Our ophthalmic surgeon and medical director is a former
expert advisor to the United States FDA on the safety of LASIK2;
An invitation that came because of his extensive work on the
long term stability and safety of LASIK while full time Assistant
Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Refractive Surgery
Research at Cornell University in New York.3
Lastly but not least, we enjoy outstanding surgical outcomes
in our LASIK patients, using the latest excimer laser released
in the world: the Carl Zeiss Meditec MEL80. Our ophthalmic surgeon's
results were the first ever outcomes to be published on the
MEL80; His final 6-month results were recently published at
the Congress of Wavefront Sensing and Aberration-Free Refractive
Correction in San Francisco.4
In this study, an outstanding 92% of all patients – which included
those with a very high refractive errors (up to -9.4 D) – achieved
20/20 (6/6) or better, 97% achieved 20/25 (6/8) or better, and
100% achieved 20/32 or better vision, which is even HIGHER than
the UK driving standard of 20/40 or 6/12. It is easy to see
from this data why enhancement (retreatment) rates at our clinic
can be expected to be exceedingly low.
And so, this brings us to the purpose of this website. It is
designed to take you, someone thinking about refractive surgery,
through a process of assessing the overall safety of the London
Vision Clinic or any other provider that you may be considering.
Technical Capability
There are three technologies that most sophisticated laser
eye surgeons are using, and one that is unique to the London
Vision Clinic in the whole of the UK.
The three basic technologies are the laser, wavefront aberrometer,
and topography. The fourth is VHF Digital Ultrasound.
At the London Vision Clinic, Professor Reinstein has
chosen what he believes to be the "best of breed" -
meaning, he has reviewed different brands and chosen the ones
that provide, in his opinion, the best outcomes - regardless
of the surgeon conducting the treatment.
