About WILMER EYE INSTITUTE, JOHN HOPKINS HOSPITAL - Eye Surgery Hospital |
About Us
Part of providing the best eye care, we believe, is to make
that care “user friendly.” Patients and referring physicians
and optometrists are often gratified to discover how easily
and quickly they can gain access to Wilmer’s doctors.
The information provided in this website is intended to help
meet that “user friendly” goal. You will find here an overview
of Wilmer’s various departments, research and training, as well
as phone numbers and email addresses for making appointments
or simply getting answers to questions. We hope you find this
information useful.
Select Staff, A Unique Setting
The Wilmer Eye Institute has long been recognized for bringing
together ophthalmologists consistently ranked by their peers
as among the finest internationally, with a specially trained
and highly experienced team of nurses cited by patients for
their knowledge, responsiveness, and sensitivity. Working together,
they have established and refined a flexible approach for delivering
state-of-the-art ophthalmic care - and created the Wilmer Eye
Care Pavilion as the optimal setting for that approach. We welcome
you to visit us.
Individual Attention to Our Patients' Needs
Through its use of innovative methods, the Wilmer Eye Care Pavilion
operates with exceptional efficiency. As a result, we provide
a level of individual attention highly valued by our patients,
whether they are visiting us for an outpatient procedure, extended
care, or emergency treatment.
Convenient and Comprehensive Outpatient Care
At the Pavilion, our patients receive the expert care of Wilmer
ophthalmologists equipped with the latest in diagnostic and
surgical technologies - yet experience all the ease and convenience
of an efficient outpatient facility. Eye services are comprehensive,
and include cataract removal, strabismus repair, glaucoma correction,
retinal surgeries, and management of chronic corneal diseases.
Complete pre-operative and post-operative care, as well as patient
education, are provided by our skilled nursing staff. Specialized
ophthalmic medications are formulated at the Pavilion's pharmacy.
A Maryland Eye Trauma Center As a designated eye
trauma center of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical
Services Systems, Wilmer's Eye Emergency Service, located in
the Pavilion , delivers 24-hour-a-day care for blunt , penetrating,
chemical, and other eye injuries, with "fast-track" assessment
and treatment. As required, we can consult with neurologists,
plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists, and social workers to address
the patient's complete needs during these episodes of acute
care.
Inpatient Services When the patient's
condition calls for extended overnight observation and treatment,
the Pavilion staff offers not only specialized inpatient eye
care but also experience in dealing with diabetes, hypertension,
dialysis, and other medical concerns. Crucial to these capabilities
is the cross-training of our nurses, who provide assessment,
monitoring, intervention, an devaluation in close partnership
with our ophthalmologists and consultant physicians. Of course
at any time the full resources of the Johns Hopkins Hospital
and its specialists are available for the patient as required.
About the Wilmer Dome The octagonal Wilmer Dome
provides patients a place for quiet relaxation in the midst
of the Wilmer Eye Care Pavilion. Within the dome are displayed
items of historical interest, including the portrait of founding
director William H Wilmer, M.D.; early ophthalmic instruments;
the "President's Chair" used by Dr. Wilmer to examine eight
Presidents of the United States; and a selection of photography
from the Wilmer Eye Institute archives. With the opening of
the Wilmer eye Care Pavilion, the Wilmer dome is accessible
to the public for the first time. |
