Cleveland Clinic Overview
At Cleveland Clinic, you can have confidence in your care.
We are one of the world's largest and busiest healthcare centers.
We offer advanced treatment for many diseases and disorders
of the body. We put patients first in everything we do.
Cleveland Clinic was founded in 1921 as a not-for-profit
group practice, integrating clinical and hospital care with
research and physician education. In addition to our
Cleveland location, we see patients at 14 family health and
ambulatory surgery centers in surrounding communities. We
also operate Cleveland Clinic Florida, a full-service
hospital and clinic in Weston, Florida, and lead an extensive
system of community hospitals. These include Fairview, Lakewood,
Lutheran, Marymount, Euclid, Hillcrest, Huron, and South Pointe hospitals.
Cleveland Clinic has 1,600 salaried physicians on staff,
representing 120 specialties and subspecialties. In
2005, we saw 2.8 million outpatient visits and almost 70,000
hospital admissions. Patients came to us from across America and from more than 80 nations.
We enjoy a strong reputation for outstanding quality care.
U.S.News & World Report ranks Cleveland Clinic as one of America's
top three hospitals. Our Heart and Vascular Institute
has been ranked number one in America for twelve
years in row. Cleveland Clinic's Glickman Urological Institute
and Digestive Disease Center both rank among America's two
best in their specialties. We also rank among the nation's
top ten in gynecology, orthopaedics, otolaryngology (ear,
nose & throat), nephrology (kidney disease), neurology and
neurological surgery, rheumatology, pulmonary (respiratory
disorders), and endocrinology. Other Cleveland Clinic specialties
noted for national excellence include ophthalmology, cancer,
pediatrics, rehabilitation and psychiatry.
Outcomes information for Cleveland Clinic specialties is available
on our Quality Measures Web pages. We offer many innovative
treatments and clinical trials that are not available at other centers.
A pioneer of internet-based medicine, Cleveland Clinic offers
on-line second opinions and other services through eClevelandClinic.com.
As a not-for-profit hospital, Cleveland Clinic serves its
community with charity care; extensive medical, educational
and community service programs; and civic education initiatives.
Each year, Cleveland Clinic and its health system of community
hospitals and family health and ambulatory surgery centers
proudly provide more than $300 million in benefits to the communities we serve.
Our Mission
The mission of The Cleveland Clinic is to provide compassionate
health care of the highest quality in a setting of education and research.
Objectives
To carry out this mission and foster the group practice of
medicine, the Foundation must :
- Attract the best qualified medical, scientific, and support staff.
- Excel in specialized medical care supported by comprehensive research and education.
- Develop, apply, evaluate, and share new technology.
- Excel in service.
- Provide efficient access to affordable medical care.
- Ensure that Cleveland Clinic quality underlies every decision.
The Founder's Vision
When The Cleveland Clinic welcomed its first patients on February
28, 1921, its sense of mission was clearly in place : "Better
care of the sick, investigation into their problems, and further
education of those who serve." The Clinic's four founders
set out to develop an institution that would be greater than
the sum of its individual parts - an institution in which
diverse specialists would be "able to think and act as a unit."
Eighty-one years and millions of patients later, their mission
statement remains a guiding principle for The Cleveland Clinic
Foundation, a not-for-profit group practice in which patient
care, research, and education are inextricably linked in order
to provide each patient with the best possible care.
