Acute, intermediate, community and mental health services will be integrated in one Trust. Services will continue to be delivered across a network of Community Clinics, Health Centres and Community Hospitals supported by two District General Hospitals, the Prince Charles Hospital which opened in 1978 and the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, which opened in 1999.
Who we are and what we do
NHS Wales includes a number of statutory organisations which are accountable to the National Assembly for Wales and the Minister for Health and Social Services; Cwm Taf NHS Trust is one of the statutory organisations.
Cwm Taf NHS Trust is a new organisation which was created on the 1st April 2008 through the integration of two previously autonomous Trusts, North Glamorgan and Pontypridd and Rhondda Trusts. As a new organisation, we are committed to openness and transparency in our dealings with people and organisations and by opening up more of our organisation we will promote integrity and trust.
We are the fourth largest Trust in Wales with an operating income of over £300 million, and in total, we employ over 7,600 staff across two District General Hospital sites – Prince Charles and Royal Glamorgan Hospital and seven smaller community hospitals. Staff provide services across the area in health centres, clinics and of course in patients’ homes.
Population served by the Trust
We provide services mainly for the people of Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil, North Cardiff, although services are also provided to the people of South Powys, the North Rhymney Valley, North Cardiff and other adjacent communities. The new Trust delivers acute, intermediate, community and mental health services to a population of approximately 330,000 residents.
Partnerships
The key local partner organisations are Merthyr Tydfil Local Health Board and Rhondda Cynon Taff Teaching Local Health Board.
Cwm Taf NHS Trust, Merthyr Tydfil Local Health Board and Rhondda Cynon Taff Teaching Local Health Board have recently employed a Lead Patient and Public Involvement Manager to work across the three organisations. This appointment has been made in an attempt to standardise Patient and Public involvement across the geographical area. The Joint Manager will work closely with the recently appointed Patient Experience Manager based within the Trust.
A joint Patient and Public Involvement Strategy and Action Plan 2009-2012 has been produced in draft form. This document will be presented to the Boards of the three organisations for ratification and introduction in April 2009.

The Trust also works with Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Powys and the Vale of Glamorgan Local Health Boards.
Other key partner organisations are the Local Authorities of Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taff and the voluntary sector organisations through RCT Voluntary Sector via Interlink and Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil (VAMT).
Key national partner organisations include Health Commission Wales, Health Inspectorate Wales, National Leadership and Innovations Agency for Health Care and the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust.
The Trust will continue to work closely with Local Health Boards and will build on the culture of working in partnership both internally with staff representative organisations and externally with the Regional Office of the Welsh Assembly Government and with other NHS Trusts
