About Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust

** About Gateshead **
Gateshead and Newcastle face each other across the River Tyne joined together by seven bridges in the central area.

The people in this area are known for being friendly and there is a strong sense of regional identity. Gateshead Quays has the most contemporary and stylish cultural and leisure attractions to be found along the River Tyne. Next to the world famous Tyne Bridge there's the stunning new Millennium Bridge, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and of course the fabulous Sir Norman Foster building, The Sage Gateshead a new home for music both national and international. More than £250 million has been invested over recent years in major new cultural and leisure facilities to transform the south bank of the River Tyne next to the world famous Tyne Bridge.

Gateshead is a pleasant combination of urban development in the East and rural land to the West. The city, country and dramatic coast are all easily accessible from Gateshead. The area is well served with public transport, and air and ferry links to mainland Europe are both about 7 miles away.

Gateshead Millenium Bridge

The two UNESCO World Heritage sites of Durham Cathedral and Hadrian's Wall are less than half an hours drive away. Indeed, several well preserved sections of the Roman Wall and its associated camps are within easy reach of central Gateshead and Newcastle. Further afield, the Scottish Borders, the Lake District and the North Yorkshire moors are all easily accessible by car, train, bus or bicycle.

And of course, Gateshead is the home of Anthony Gormley's world famous multi-award winning sculpture, the Angel of the North. This major landmark at the entrance to Tyneside is Britain's largest sculpture, seen by more than 33 million people every year.

For sport, there is the International Athletics Stadium in Gateshead, premier league football at Newcastle United, basketball, ice hockey, rugby as well as cricket at the Riverside in Durham.

One of the best features of north-east England is the close proximity of magnificent unspoilt countryside to the main residential areas. In the western part of Gateshead there are pleasant scenic walks, mainly in the Derwent Valley. Further west and south is the beautiful open moorland of County Durham, split by the valleys of Weardale and Teesdale.

To the north and west lies rural Northumberland with its National Park, hills, moors and forests that can be explored by car, on foot or by bicycle. The breathtaking Northumberland coast has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Here you find fine sandy beaches, fishing villages, fabulous unspoilt landscapes and the ancient castles which were used as the coastal defences of the region.
