Some 56,000 patients attend our A&E department at Pontefract each year and more than 3,000 babies are born at the site's comprehensive inpatient maternity services.
In addition we have an elective orthopaedic facility for Pontefract and Wakefield patients requiring elective joint surgery, this includes a 40-bed ward and two clean air theatres.
This is an exciting time for healthcare in Pontefract and Wakefield, as we are about to embark on the long awaited build of two new hospitals here. The new facilities will enable us to provide healthcare in bright, modern and accessible facilities.
Work is well underway on our two new state-of-the-art hospitals which will transform healthcare services in the area and give local people access to two new first-rate hospitals.
Outdated buildings at both Pinderfields General Hospital in Wakefield and Pontefract General Infirmary in Pontefract are being replaced or upgraded to house new high tech facilities designed to provide top quality care for patients.
The new hospitals at Pontefract and Wakefield will be joining the excellent modern hospital at Dewsbury to provide high quality care to people throughout mid Yorkshire.
You can look forward to the opening of the new hospitals from 2010.
In the meantime, this section of the Trust website aims to give you more information on the new hospitals and the changes that will take place as they are being built.
