About Pioneers Medical Center
** About Us **
MORE CARE THAN YOU IMAGINED
Pioneers' history began in 1947 when Freeman Fairfield, a former resident of this community, approached the Rio Blanco County Commissioners about establishing a hospital. Mr. Fairfield worked with the Commissioners and a group of local citizens to build a hospital for the Meeker community. Opening its doors in 1950, Pioneers Hospital began offering acute health care and surgical services to the community. Today, Pioneers Medical Center is licensed through the Colorado State Department of Health, and is both Medicare and Medicaid-certified. We accept commercial insurance, most health plans, and self-pay. Financial arrangements may be set up through the Business Office.
In 1960, the Walbridge Memorial Convalescent Wing opened its doors for long-term care, made possible through the generosity of Lewis and Adelaide Walbridge. Attached to the north side of the hospital, the Walbridge Wing, with its 33 beds, provides long-term skilled nursing services to its residents. Through the Wing's rehabilitation services, exercise, and activity groups, each resident's care is individualized to meet his or her physical, emotional, nutritional, and spiritual needs. The Wing is also licensed by the Colorado State Department of Health, and accepts Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans, and private-pay residents. Please visit the Walbridge Wing's individual page on this site.
A wide variety of health care services are delivered through Meeker Family Health Center. The MFHC originated in 1990 as a rural health clinic, and its physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistant, and staff continue to strive to meet our community's, workers and visitors' healthcare needs. Please visit MFHC's individual page on this site for more information, and visit our Physician Directory to locate a specific provider.

History Of Pioneers Medical Center
** Our History **
The history of Pioneers Medical Center begins in 1947 with the generous endowment from Freeman Fairfield.
In 1950, PMC opened its doors providing clinical and acute care services. In 1960, Adelaide and Carl Walbridge’s generosity made it possible to grow the PMC campus to include The Walbridge Memorial Wing, a licensed skilled-nursing facility.
In 1998, through the generosity of the entire community and foundations, the PMC campus expanded to meet the growing community needs and added the Meeker Family Health Center. During this recent expansion several other services were able to grow, such as surgical services, rehabilitation therapy, cardiopulmonary services, laboratory and radiology services.
Today, PMC is a vibrant rural healthcare center. It offers a Level IV Emergency Room/Trauma Center to stabilize and treat emergency patients. Modern technology allows PMC to perform proactive health services such as cancer screenings, child wellness, women wellness, and much more. Additionally, PMC has collaborative relationships with St Mary’s Hospital, in Grand Junction and Valley View Hospital, in Glenwood Springs, to increase patient care.
