Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center's beautiful 480-bed facility has some of the most advanced technology and skilled medical experts in the area. PSJMC is designated as a Primary Stroke Center, our Neuroscience Institute also provides the area's only 24/7 neurosurgeons, neurologists and neurointerventionalists. History Of Provena Saint Joseph Med Ctr
** History/Overview **
The 475-bed Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center is a division of Provena Health, the integrated health care delivery network formed by the merger of Franciscan Sisters Health Care Corporation, ServantCor, and Mercy Center for Health Care Services. Provena Health includes six hospitals, 13 long-term/residential facilities and over 40 clinics in Illinois and Indiana. Provena Health is governed by a twelve-member Board of Directors. Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center has a local 15-member Board of Directors.
Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center was founded in 1882. In 1964, the hospital moved from 372 North Broadway in downtown Joliet to 333 N. Madison Street on Joliet's west side. (Would you like to learn more about our history and see historical photos? Click here!)
Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center has a medical staff of more than 400 physicians representing over 50 medical specialties and employs over 2,600 professional, technical and support personnel. We are affiliated with the Provena Family Health Centers located in Coal City, New Lenox and Plainfield.
Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center provides many advanced health care services typically found in a university hospital setting. Through a partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago, we are the only provider of neurosurgical services in the Will-Grundy region.
The Saint Joseph Heart Center is an entire floor solely dedicated to the treatment of the heart and centered on the area’s only open-heart surgery program, offering patients an advanced level of cardiac care that’s unprecedented anywhere in the region.
Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center is presently undergoing a major renovation and construction project that will result in a new eight-story patient tower and all private patient rooms, as well as many special amenities that will create an environment expressly designed to promote family-centered care and enhance clinical outcomes.
In addition, Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center serves the community’s wide-range of health care needs through its Sister Theresa Cancer Care Center, Level II Emergency/Trauma Center, Family Birthing Suites, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Rehabilitation Services, Mental Health Services, Sleep Disorder Center and Retina Center. Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center has been part of the Joliet community for more than 120 years and continues to carry out the mission of its dedicated founding Sisters and set the highest standards of medical care for the community.
