History Of Allegan General Hospital
** Historical Overview of Allegan General Hospital **
Allegan General Hospital is a not-for-profit, acute care facility governed by a 11 member board of trustees. The original Allegan General Hospital was incorporated in May 1938 as the Allegan Health Center. It was financed by contributions from the County Board of Supervisors, the Kellogg Foundation, the Federal Works Agency, and individual subscriptions from the citizens of Allegan. The first Board of Trustees was comprised of several notable Alleganites--Earl W. Delano, Grover C. Cook, H.D. Tripp, George H. Horan, and E.W. Stone.
* January 1, 1940 The first patient was admitted to the hospital.
* 1945 bed capacity increased to 40
* 1949 Remodeling increased bed capacity to 44 and provided for an O.B.
Unit. Previously, O.B. patients were admitted to any available room.
* 1953 The Radiology Department opened.
* 1959 The East-West wing was added. The large expansion project increased
bed capacity to 86. It also added the first Emergency Room.
* 1961 bed capacity increased to 90
* 1970 Changes in health care dictated the development of a four bed
Intensive Care Unit.
* 1971 Cardio-pulmonary department was open.
* January 1, 1972 Allegan Health Center becomes Allegan General Hospital.
1976 An Oncology Clinic opened.
* 1982 Building expansion included Surgery and Recovery Room, Intension
Care Unit, Dietary/Cafeteria, Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (2 East), and
Obstetric Suite. Major renovation also took place in Physical Therapy,
Occupational Therapy, Laboratory, Radiology, Cardio-Pulmonary, Emergency
Room, and Education. Bed capacity is now 80.
* 1987 A decrease need for Med-Surg beds resulted in combining the two Med-
Surg Units into one and the Short Stay Unit was open.
* 1991 An addition was added to house the CAT Scanner.
* 1994 Mobile MRI services are offered at AGH for the first time.
* 2000 Physical Therapy Department moves into the new Health & Fitness
Center.
* 2001 Building project is completed connecting the hospital to new
medical offices. The Emergency Department, Occupational Health and
Specialty Physician Office are relocated into new larger space. Major
renovation also took place in Radiology including the purchase of a two new
pieces of equipment, CT Scanner and a Radiography & Fluoroscopy.
