History Of Barrett Memorial Hospital
** Early Beginnings **
The Martin Barrett Hospital opened in 1923; the result of generous bequeaths by community members Martin Barrett, Joseph Shineberger, and Margaret Roe. The original hospital was a three-story brick building with 12 single patient rooms and four wards. Staff dormitory rooms were on the third floor. Expenses for the first six months of operation were $5,760.10. Receipts were $3,335.80. Appropriate for the times, room charges ranged from $4.00 to $6.00 per day.
In 1971, a new hospital was built and the Martin Barrett Hospital closed. Early on, the financial stability of the new Barrett Memorial Hospital was a priority.
