History Of Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center
At Carson Tahoe, we’ve been meeting the needs of our community for decades, and while a lot has changed since we first opened our doors in 1949, one thing hasn’t – our commitment to providing exceptional healthcare to our region in a state-of-the-art, healing environment that puts patients first.
It all started in the late 1940’s, when Carson City was a small town of 2,500 people. It was a charming community with tree-lined residential streets and only one paved road, Carson Street.
It was a time when doctors made house calls at all hours of the night, often arriving in slippers and a coat over their pajamas, if minor surgery was required, it was often performed at the patient’s home.
In 1949, however, things changed. Thanks to the generous donations of the community and of Major Max C. Fleischmann, Carson-Tahoe Hospital opened its doors to serve Carson City, a town that, up until then, had been located 30 miles away from any other hospital.
The first hospital cost $80,000 to build and was staffed by one doctor, three nurses, an X-ray technologist, laboratory technologist, a cook and a janitor. The hospital’s first patient, Robert Clark, called it “more like a home than a hospital.”
With the expansion of Carson City a new, and larger, hospital became a necessity and on July 11, 1967 groundbreaking ceremonies for a new Carson-Tahoe Hospital took place. But on August 26, 1968, before the opening of the new hospital, the original hospital caught fire and burnt to the ground. The construction company building the new hospital was willing to speed-up work and the new hospital opened its doors in November 1968.
Today, we’ve evolved into a progressive, technologically advanced healthcare leader in northern Nevada. We’ve set new standards in services – including women and children’s, cardiac, rehabilitation, surgical, outpatient and cancer services – and we’ve made recruiting top doctors a priority. In fact, our hospital medical staff has grown to over 240 board-certified physicians representing more than 35 medical specialties.
But we’re not content to just rest on our laurels. That’s why we’re constantly moving onward and upward with added services, new treatments, and continued research. Together, with the support of our community, staff and volunteers, we’re leading the region toward better health every day.
