History Of Artesia General Hospital
Artesia General Hospital officially opened as a 28-bed hospital in September 1939. The facility was funded by the City of Artesia with Artesia residents raising the money necessary to equip the hospital.
After a succession of organizations managing the hospital, local citizens voted in the 1970s to establish a special hospital district, and in 1978 the Artesia Special Hospital District assumed responsibility of the hospital from the City.
A new hospital, licensed for 34 beds, was completed in October of 1981, and that facility served the community well for more than 20 years. However, as the number of services offered has increased, additional space was needed for the hospital. In 2006, a 67,000 foot addition was completed. The new area allows for expanded patient care services.
In 2007 the facility built in 1981 will receive a makeover. The remodeled area will house expanded support services, a medical clinic and administrative offices.
Community Hospital Corporation has leased the hospital from the ASHD since 1999. AGH is a community based not-for-profit hospital. All monies made by AGH remain in Artesia.
Services currently available at AGH include 24/7 emergency services, acute and sub-acute inpatient medical/surgical services, ambulatory, ophthalmic, podiatric and general surgery, outpatient diabetic education, nutritional counseling, sleep diagnostics, pulmonary rehabilitation and asthma clinic, and a Life Line program for seniors. In addition, Artesia General Hospital supports the local community Meals on Wheels program, by preparing all meals served.
