History Of Abilene Regional Medical Center
** Our History **
** Abilene Regional Medical Center History **
Abilene Regional Medical Center was built in 1968 under the name West Texas Medical Center by a group of physicians and investors. In 1970, the hospital Heart Team performed the first heart catheterization in Midwest Texas, and also completed the area's first open heart surgery.
In 1984, the hospital moved to it's new home on a 33-acre campus in South Abilene, now the city's fastest growing area. In 1992 the Abilene Heart & Vascular Institute opened, followed by the addition of a pediatric cardiology clinic in 1996. The success rate for open heart surgery at Abilene Regional exceeds the state and national averages.
The Cancer Program is the only facility within an 80-mile radius of Abilene certified by the American College of Surgeons (ACOS). Abilene Regional continues to expand with the 2004 joint venture with Sears Methodist Retirement Systems in opening the Senior Healthcare Center, which offers the senior citizen population specialized care and is staffed by a physician with a board certification in geriatrics.
More than 200 physicians, representing 44 areas of medical specialization, and 750 employees provide care at our 231-bed hospital. Abilene Regional has plenty of room to grow and we continue to make our hospital the first choice in healthcare.
