May 31, 2005 (Calgary, AB) – Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS) celebrated National Medical Laboratory Week from April 24 to 30, 2005. This year’s theme, Canada’s Medical Laboratory Professionals: On the Frontline for Your Health illustrates the unique part medical laboratories play in the health care system.
“Close to 4,000 patients will visit one of CLS’s Patient Service Centres and 20,000 laboratory tests will be performed daily,” says Dr. Fred Swaine, Acting Chief Operating Officer of CLS. “That said – few people are aware of the importance of the work by medical laboratories and they are sometimes referred to as the ‘silent service’.”
Calgary is one of many cities across the country celebrating the work done by its medical laboratory professionals. Mayor Dave Bronconnier proclaimed April 24 to 30 National Medical Laboratory Week in Calgary. Founded by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS), National Medical Laboratory Week recognizes the trained professionals who make critical contributions to our health. CSMLS is the national certifying body for medical laboratory technologists and assistants.
“Medical laboratory professionals are Canada’s third largest group of health care experts,” says Daphne Kuchinski, Communications Officer for CLS. “Our technologists, assistants, scientists and medical staff play integral roles in battling infectious diseases, looking for cancer in tissues and identifying harmful bacteria. It has the makings of a TV drama – but it’s real life here at the laboratory.”
