Important changes to women and children’s services
Date : - 22/09/2009
On 19 October 2009, a number of changes will be made to women and children’s services at Wycombe Hospital.

This is in line with plans to centralise inpatient care at our new Women and Baby Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, with Wycombe Hospital continuing to provide a range of outpatient, day surgery and minor injury services, as well as a midwife-led birth centre.
Stoke Mandeville’s Women and Baby Centre is a multimillion pound investment in dedicated facilities, including all en-suite delivery rooms and expanded neonatal intensive care.

The centre, called Claydon Wing, will be based adjacent to the A&E department.

Whilst a majority of patients’ care will remain at their local hospital, Buckinghamshire hospitals are advising that children who may be seriously ill or injured and women in labour who are not booked to use the midwife-led birth centre should not be taken to Wycombe Hospital from 19 October.

Celina Eves, head of midwifery at Buckinghamshire hospitals, said: “After years of planning, we’re looking forward to moving into our brand new facilities and offering women a full range of birthing options in enhanced surroundings.

“The new unit is first-class and will help us improve the quality of care we are able to provide to women and children in Buckinghamshire. It’s important to note that a range of high-quality services will remain at Wycombe and this will continue to be the hospital of choice for many patients,” continued Celina.

“These changes will also enable us to meet the needs of different patient groups and maintain their privacy and dignity in a safe environment.

“There will be a high profile public awareness campaign over the coming weeks to ensure the message is distributed far and wide. We would ask people to help us spread the word that our services are changing to help ensure women and children go to the right place for the treatment they need,” urged Celina.

As a result of the changes, the following services will be offered at each site from 19 October 2009:

The promotional campaign will include; posters, leaflets and postcards distributed across Wycombe and the surrounding areas. Adverts will also appear in local papers and a special section has been established on the Trust’s website.
