| Abington Memorial Hospital Wins Pennsylvania Medical Society's Community Organization Diversity Awar |

(Harrisburg, PA) — Nominated by the Montgomery County Medical Society, Abington Memorial Hospital was recently named the 2009 recipient of the Community Organization Diversity Award from the Pennsylvania Medical Society.
The award recognizes the accomplishments of an organization that encourages ethnic and gender diversity in the medical profession, is actively engaged in attracting and retaining physicians from diverse backgrounds to Pennsylvania, and promotes excellence in medical care in ethnic communities.
According to the nomination forms, Abington Memorial Hospital recognizes diversity as one of its five pillars that serves as the foundation for its strategic planning. Many hospital departments develop and implement goals relating to the care of diverse populations.
Its outreach initiative, "Closing the Gap: Expanding Minority Health Options," helps to highlight Abington Memorial Hospital's commitment to diversity. "Closing the Gap" includes health outreach education and screening programs that are community based. Some of its programs include "Building Healthy Vessels", "What Korean Women Need to Know About Breast Cancer", and a diversity health care career education fair. Abington Memorial Hospital also sponsors a summer co-op program which provides exposure and work experience to minority students who may be interested in careers in healthcare or related fields.
In addition, all hospital employees are required to participate in a two-day diversity education program. Also, benefit-eligible employees, after one year of employment, are granted up to 40 hours every other year for community service of their choice.
Abington Memorial Hospital will be formally honored with the award on October 24, 2009, at the annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Medical Society to be held in Hershey.
