Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is committed to improving health care safety. The following top 10 tips should help patients and their families become active members of their healthcare team:
1 Rid your medicine cabinets of old or expired
medications
2 Obtain copies of all of your health care records
and keep them in a safe place
3 Write down and carry with you all prescription
medicines, over the counter medicines (including
doses) and any allergies
4 Identify and ‘advocate’ – a family member or
friend – who can accompany you to doctor visits and
or hospital to ask questions on your behalf
5 Be sure your family knows what your preferences are
regarding health care in case you are unable to
speak for yourself.
6 If you don’t understand your doctor’s instructions,
be sure to say so and ask for written instructions.
7 Ask questions about medications: What are they? Is
there a generic or another name for the medicine?
How will it help me? What are the side effects? Can
I take this with my allergy?
8 Don’t be afraid to ask family members, doctors,
nurses or visitors to wash their hands when they
enter your room
9 Be sure you understand your treatment plan (tests,
surgical procedures, etc.).
10 If undergoing surgery you should have a clear
understanding of what will happen before, during
and after surgery.
