Boscobel Area Health Care |
Free program for middle school students and parents offered in Boscobel |
Date : - 14/10/2008 |
Strengthening Families, a nationally renowned program designed for parents of teens, will be offered in Boscobel. The seven session class begins October 14th, and will be held every Tuesday through November 18th at Boscobel Schools. There is no cost to participate.
Strengthening Families is an interactive program that engages parents and their children in strengthening their relationships. Designed for parents and their youth ages 10-14, the seven week program addresses the ever-difficult balance of showing love while setting limits.
Sessions are two hours long, and meet once a week. Each session begins with a free meal, followed by the program. During the first hour, parents and youth meet separately with their facilitators. Youth cover goal setting, understanding their parent's role, communication, dealing with peer pressure, and handling stress. Parents discuss setting boundaries, discipline, what to expect during the teen years, and how to help your child succeed. During the second hour, parents and youth meet together as a family for an activity that reinforces the lessons in individual sessions.
"The approach to this program was very unique," said Mary Sprosty, Community Relations Coordinator for Boscobel Area Health Care "Instead of offering a youth program to teach goal setting, or a parent program to teach discipline and communication, this program engages both the young person and their parent together to set goals and problem solve. The message is that while teens and parents often come at things from different angles, they ultimately have the same goal - for the young person to be happy, healthy, and successful."
Sprosty said she highly recommends the program, both as a community educator and as someone who has participated in it herself. "My daughter and I attended this class two years ago. We discussed topics I may not have been comfortable bringing up otherwise. This class gave us an excuse to discuss things like curfews and drug prevention without her having to be defensive or me having to be bossy. It was neutral and relaxed, which is not always typical when a mother and teen address touchy topics. I was grateful for the opportunity to be so proactive in her future and safety."
Strengthening Families is a unique answer to struggles parents and their middle school children face, including growing up without growing apart.
This session is sponsored by the Grant and Crawford UW-Extension, S.A.F.E. Grant County Coalition, Boscobel Area Health Care, Boscobel School District, and the Crawford Abuse Resistance Effort.
