The story of the Aberdeen Health Foundation is a story of shared successes. It is the story of a group of people coming together to raise funds in support of their local hospital. It is the story of a community rallying around that cause, raising a remarkable $6.5 million dollars with the initial capital campaign. And it is the story of that organization’s ongoing commitment to carefully steward donations for growth—and grow they have.
The Capital Campaign of 1990-1995 was an enormous success, creating an endowment that has provided continuous financial support for health care in Pictou County. Beginning with an extraordinary gift of $1 million dollars from the Frank & Irene Sobey Memorial Trust, the fund grew beyond expectations, highlighting the outstanding community spirit that was present during this project.
What began as the Aberdeen Hospital Foundation in 1986 became the Aberdeen Health Foundation in 2009, with the initial inspiration to create and grow a fund solely for the purpose of improving health care delivery, equipment, and training still at work through the Foundation’s Board of Directors today.
The individuals who came together to establish the Foundation were united in a common purpose: to improve lives in our community by ensuring access to quality health services at home.
As responsible stewards, the Aberdeen Health Foundation has very successfully managed its initial endowment and subsequent donations to get results. These financial results translate into enhanced health care in Pictou County, touching many lives.
The Aberdeen Health Foundation is in the unique position of being able to impact each and every resident of Pictou County. The Foundation works closely with the Pictou County Health Authority to anticipate trends and position our community to be a leader in state-of-the-art health care. In an ever-changing health care system, this means continually adapting our organization’s priorities and objectives to keep pace. As responsible stewards, the Foundation values the absolute trust and respect of the community and Health Authority.
After more than 20 years of filling this vital role in Pictou County, we are today the largest, consistent charitable provider of financial support for health care in our community.
