Cape Breton Healthcare Complex
Community Members Invited to Help Name the New Hospital
Date : - 05/03/2010
As the new hospital for Colchester East Hants takes shape, the Colchester East Hants Health Authority (CEHHA) is now launching a process to name the facility.

“For years we have spoken of our new hospital or the Colchester Regional Hospital Replacement Project, but the time has come to officially name this important investment in the health of our communities,” says CEHHA CEO Peter MacKinnon. “We are excited to be engaging or communities in identifying a name that will resonate the pride and vision we all share for this facility.”

The health authority is seeking a name that:
· reflects the role of new facility;
· is not exclusive of any communities served;
· creates and maintains a sense of pride and recognition;
· is not offensive to various religious beliefs, cultures or ethnic groups;
· is easy to read, pronounce and print;
· sounds credible; and
· results in acceptable acronym

Individuals or groups are invited to submit their suggested name along with a brief essay (approximately 200 words or less) explaining why they feel it should be selected. Submissions should be sent by no later than noon on Friday, April 16 to one of the following:

Email newhospital@cehha.nshealth.ca
Fax (902) 8930040
Mail Attn: Krista Wood, Chair
Community Advisory Committee
207 Willow Street, Truro, NSB2N 5A1
(submissions must be postdated by noon April 16)

The list of submissions will be compiled by the health authority and the complete list of names will be shared with the Community Advisory Committee. A sub-committee will meet to review the names submitted and essays and score each name based on the identified objectives/criteria and using a scoring system. Those scoring the names will not be aware of the group or individual responsible for the submission. This scoring process will identify a short list of a maximum of five names which will be forwarded to the CEHHA Board of Directors for review and approval this spring.

Following this approval the shortlist of names will be announced and individuals will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite name by mail, fax, phone or on-line at www.cehha.nshealth.ca.

The naming process was identified through a new Community Advisory Committee which began meeting in January. The committee was established to foster input and dialogue on a variety of issues relating to the new hospital. To help create a committee that broadly represents the community, a public call for expressions of interest was issued last year, with the hope of identifying representation from the following: each municipal unit, religious community, staff and volunteer groups associated with the health authority, Millbrook and Indian Brook First Nations, and the community at large.

While launching a naming process was identified as the first priority for the committee, the group will also provide input and assistance on a variety of other topics, including:
· identifying a process to mark the creation of the new facility (e.g. time capsule);
· establishing a process to deal with existing arts and artifacts;
· providing advice on communications activities related to the project;
· determining ways to promote the new facility in the communities served and
· identifying ways to engage the community in the official opening.

Note: The following is intended to serve as a template for submissions. Submissions do not need to be made using this document, but should include all of the elements identified.
